Job Summary

The Energy Market Data Analyst will support API's Policy, Economics, & Regulatory Affairs Division by designing and updating relevant data analytical tools and contributing to work streams. This division represents all segments of the oil and natural gas industry-upstream, midstream, and downstream-and provides support to members of the American Petroleum Institute on issues affecting the industry.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain well-designed and user-friendly data analysis tools that include relevant energy and economic data.
  • Create compelling charts and graphics while following formatting guidelines.
  • Monitor and interpret changes in the energy market. Identify relevant market trends and insights.
  • Contribute to the Division's near-term and long-term deliverables, including briefs, presentations, articles, website content, data library, and ad hoc projects with the objective to raise understanding of energy issues, enhance API's capacity to explain market developments of short- and long-run significance, and inform API's advocacy.
  • Respond to events quickly and provide support to various API departments, committees, and communications team by generating graphics and data, and fact checking.

Key Relationships

  • Report to the Director of Energy Market Analysis. Work closely with other members of the Policy, Economics, & Regulatory Affairs Division and other related teams.

Qualifications

  • Requires 0-3 years of experience in a similar role and subject matter expertise.
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant area, or other related field equivalent work experience. Master's degree is preferred.
  • Knowledge and interest in economic concepts and the energy market.
  • Experience in data mining from multiple sources to use in business intelligence applications, dashboards, and data visualizations. Experience navigating and pulling data from EIA, IEA, OPEC, JODI, Bloomberg, IMF, or other similar sources is a bonus.
  • Intellectually curious. Strong initiative and team orientation. Collaborative mindset.
  • Flexibility, creativity, and an ability to grasp new concepts quickly.
  • Proficiency in data visualization in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. Experience in Tableau, PowerBI, or other visualization software is preferred.
  • Excellent communications (written, verbal and graphical), planning, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with either SAS, SQL, Python, R, VBA, or other data management/programming language is a bonus.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to remain in a stationary position working on a computer
  • Move about the office to access office machinery, meeting rooms, etc. on occasion
  • Operate a computer and other office machinery such as printers and copy machines
  • Transport items and equipment up to 10 lbs. on occasion
