SRA 2 NEX

The Hagerman Laboratory within the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine uses molecular techniques to characterize neurological disorders related to the FMR1 gene, specifically, fragile X syndrome (FXS) and fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS). The focus of research is the molecular characterization of gene expression and cellular pathways that underlie the pathogenesis of these disorders. Relevant fundamental techniques include human/mammalian cell culture; DNA, RNA, and protein extraction; PCR and qRT-PCR; immuno-based assays; and transfection of cultured human and mammalian cells. Continued assay development and optimization will be performed as needed to further the research goals of the laboratory. Research in the lab also relies heavily on processing both human and non-human (mammalian) brain tissues and blood samples. Importantly, the position requires the ability to conduct experiments and troubleshoot with minimal supervision, to interpret and document results, and to effectively communicate those results orally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications

• Valid Driver's license and insurance, ownership of or access to a reliable vehicle to pick up samples in Sacramento as needed
• Minimum of bachelor's degree in genetics, molecular biology, or related field
• Minimum 2 years of relevant wet-lab molecular genetics research experience post bachelor's degree (does not include classroom work).
• Develop and adapt assays with some guidance
• At least two (2) years of primary/independent experience in mammalian cell culture, post-baccalaureate
• Maintain a safe working environment, including while working with hazardous and biohazardous materials
• Purify biomolecules (e.g., DNA, RNA, and protein) from cells or tissues
• Familiarity with immuno-based assays (e.g., western blot, ELISAs, FRET, immunostaining)
• Familiarity with amplification (e.g., PCR, qRT-PCR)
• Ability to analyze and present data in written and spoken reports in English
• Proficiently use personal computer and software, including (but not limited to) MS Word and Excel
• Close attention to detail
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to communicate in a pleasant, tactful, and effective manner and to handle difficult, sensitive, and/or confidential issues with others
• Ability to learn and follow ethical principles and federal and state regulations governing the participation of human subjects in biomedical research, as well as rules and regulations regarding lab safety
• Ability to drive to Sacramento to pick up lab samples and transport them to Davis, as needed, according to DOT regulations

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with purchasing laboratory supplies, equipment inventory, laboratory safety knowledge or training, and maintenance of chemical inventory, CLIA documentation binders, and inventory notebooks
• Experience in the culture of iPSCs and iPSC-derived neuronal cells
• 3 or more years of relevant wet-lab molecular genetics research experience post-bachelor's degree
• Experience with:
  • FRET and ELISA assays to detect and characterize protein expression in patient samples
  • Experience working with both human and mouse brain tissues
  • High-content imaging
  • Analytical and preparative cell sorting
  • Coding (R, python, perl, or other software for bioanalysis)
• Familiar with Photoshop, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Endnote, and graphics software to prepare tables, charts, graphics, slides, and written documents in different formats to support PI in writing grants and papers
• Familiarity with CRISPR to modulate gene expression in cell culture
• Familiarity with sample preparation and data analysis for mass spectrometry and/or mRNA/miRNA-seq (or other big data projects)
• Knowledge of FMR1-related disorders or other neurodevelopmental/neurodegenerative disorders

Department Description

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine's mission is to conduct world-class research in biochemistry and molecular medicine, to excel in undergraduate, graduate, and medical education, and to serve the university through leadership in forums committed to graduate and professional school admissions and curriculum. Research in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine addresses the fundamental molecular aspects of cell biology, gene expression, cancer biology, membrane biology, glycobiology, neurobiology, muscle physiology, human genetics, chemical and structural biology, molecular imaging, and drug development. In addition to innovative research activities, faculty are involved in the teaching and training of medical and doctoral students.

The faculty of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine maintain laboratories in the Davis Campus at Tupper Hall and in the Department of Chemistry. In Sacramento, the Department maintains laboratories at the Oak Park Research Building, UC Davis Cancer Center, and MIND Institute.
