Position Summary & Duties Responsible

POSITION SUMMARY

Substance Abuse Functional Area:

Substance Abuse Technician will perform professional level duties and functions associated with the treatment of substance abuse (drugs and alcohol). Provide comprehensive detoxification and treatment services to clients.

Social Services Functional Area:

Under direction of the assigned supervisor, perform professional level duties and functions associated with case management.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES SUMMARY

Substance Abuse Functional Area:

  1. Obtain relevant information about clients through interview, assessment and case history; assist and support clients through addiction detoxification and recovery; observe, intervene and report client adherence to program goals and objectives.
  2. Work in conjunction with other department staff to administer scheduled program curriculum and other activities utilized for treatment and rehabilitation of substance abuse.
  3. Gather and research data utilized to track the reliability and validity of treatment that has been provided; make recommendations regarding modification of services and service delivery.
  4. Process new clients, i.e., issuance of clothing, orientation to the rules of facilities and assist clients with daily activities, events and informational literature.
  5. Will provide education to individuals and groups in the community and facilitate group presentations and workshops.
  6. Transport clients to appointments and other service locations outside of assigned program.
  7. Maintain progress notes and document behavioral incidents through observation of clients and maintain confidential records.
  8. Participate in reviews of job performance and adhere to recommended measures for change. 9. Receive guidance and training from Program Supervisor within the division.
  9. Maintain current knowledge base on counseling issues regarding substance abuse through conferences, educational training and networking with other agencies or groups.
  10. Perform other job-related duties as assigned or required.

Social Services Functional Area:

  1. Obtain relevant information about clients through interview, assessment, and case history to determine the client's case management needs, existence, or level of addiction severity. Assist in the determination of proper therapeutic approaches and level of care and report client adherence to program goals and objectives.
  2. Work in conjunction with other department staff to administer scheduled program curriculum and other activities utilized for treatment and rehabilitation.
  3. Process new clients, i.e., issuance of clothing, orientation to the rules of facilities, and assist clients with daily activities, events, and informational literature.
  4. Provide customer service and advocacy on behalf of clients.
  5. Responsible for the timely and accurate documentation and reporting of case management processes. Maintain case notes and associated documentation.
  6. Prepare case files for periodic review and quality assurance.
  7. Perform department program related duties in residential, community, and jail-based settings.
  8. Transport clients to appointments and other service locations outside of assigned program.
  9. Receive guidance and training from Program Supervisors and Coordinators within the division.
  10. Maintain current knowledge base in social service and community health issues as it relates to case management, homelessness, criminal justice, harm reduction and substance use through conferences, educational training and networking with other agencies or groups.
  11. Incumbent(s) in this classification may handle sensitive and/or confidential records, plans, documents, or decisions that require maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information. ?
  12. Any one position may not include all duties listed. However, the allocation of positions will be determined by the amount of time spent performing the essential duties listed above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. High School Diploma and two (2) years of work experience involving substance abuse, healthcare, law enforcement, emergency management, or corrections. Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience may be considered for the above requirements.

Supplemental Information

PREFERENCES

Substance Abuse Functional Area:

  1. Experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) preferred.

Social Services Functional Area:

  1. Bilingual (English & Spanish) preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

The offer of this Bernalillo County position requires compliance with the following:

Substance Abuse Functional Area:

  1. Employee must successfully complete the post-offer employment medical examination and background investigation.
  2. Pursuant to the criminal history screening for Caregivers Act, Section 29-17-1 through Section 29-17-5 NMSA 1978, new hires at the Bernalillo County Behavioral Health Services facility will be required to complete a caregiver criminal history screening for all caregivers. Conviction of a disqualifying condition is cause for termination or sufficient reason not to hire if applicant has a disqualifying condition on their record at time of application.
  3. Employee must have a valid New Mexico driver's license by employment date and maintain a valid NM driver's license while employed in this position.
  4. Employee may be required to work different shifts and program reassignments.
  5. Employee must complete required FEMA training(s) as assigned to position.
  6. May be required to work mandated overtime as needed.

Social Services Functional Area:

  1. Employee must successfully complete the post-offer employment medical examination and background investigation.

  4. Employee must complete required FEMA training(s) as assigned to position.
  5. Employee may be required to work different shifts and program reassignments.
  6. May be required to work mandated overtime as needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Substance Abuse Functional Area:

  1. Essential job duties are performed indoors in climate-controlled environment.
  2. Primary work surface is even, dry, carpeted or tiled floor.
  3. Works alone primarily, with or without directions. Works with groups and with a select team at times

Social Services Functional Area:

  1. The majority of essential duties are performed indoors in a temperature-controlled environment.
  2. Outdoor duties are sometimes required in performance of essential duties and worker is exposed to natural weather conditions while performing outdoor duties.
  3. Worker may be exposed to intermittent noise and vibration, a variety of fumes and odors, contagious diseases and potentially hostile and dangerous situations.
  4. Indoor working surface is even and may be carpeted or tiled.
  5. Indoor surfaces are typically dry and may involve the use of stairs.
  6. Outdoor surface may be even or uneven and may be wet or dry.
  7. Outdoor duties may involve the use of stairs or ladders and may be performed on inclines or hills.
  8. Outdoor surfaces may include natural ground, asphalt, or concrete.
  9. Work hazards or potential work hazards include those of a treatment facility environment with exposure to noise and dangerous situations that could involve serious bodily injury and other health hazards.
  10. Work hazards include high stress level of job, and operating of a vehicle.

EQUIPMENT, TOOLS AND MATERIALS

Substance Abuse Functional Area:

  1. Telephone, typewriter, calculator, computer, fax machine, and copy machine are used in performance of essential job duties.
  2. Various forms of paperwork are handled in performance of essential job duties.

Social Services Functional Area:

  1. Equipment typically used to perform administrative duties include the telephone, computer, fax machine, photocopy machine, and walkie-talkie radio.
  2. Worker may handle first aid and AED equipment on an occasional basis.
  3. Materials and products typically handled in the performance of administrative duties include a wide variety of forms and paperwork, reports, various writing utensils and a wide assortment of other basic office supplies and materials.
