Research Scientist
The MIT Department of Mathematics seeks a research scientist to develop the Magma computer algebra system under a grant from the Simons Foundation. The position is based at MIT under the direction of principal investigator (PI) Andrew Sutherland and is part of a collaboration between MIT and the University of Sydney (PI John Voight). Will be engaged in a combination of software development research and mathematical research.
Responsibilities include designing and implementing algorithms in arithmetic geometry, number theory, group theory, representation theory, commutative algebra, and algebraic geometry and facilitating their integration into Magma; the publication of research papers devoted to the theory and analysis of these algorithms; coordinating with researchers across multiple institutions working on computational aspects of these fields; compiling mathematical data sets relevant to research in these areas and integrating them into Magma; and participating in and supporting workshops and meetings.
Required Qualifications:
The start date is September 1, 2024 (negotiable), with an anticipated end date of August 31, 2029, and the possibility for renewal. Hiring for this position and any renewal is contingent upon funding.
