Research Technologist

The Behavioral Neuroscience Division is seeking a Research Technologist to perform laboratory tasks and complete routine assays following common or established protocols and procedures, under the general supervision of a faculty investigator, post-doctoral fellow or laboratory supervisor.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. Uses basic understanding of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and troubleshoot situations needing special attention. Collects, compiles and analyzes data using basic word processing and spreadsheet (Microsoft Office) computer programs.
  • Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments which may include biohazard/radiation handling, basic cell and tissue culture, cell separation methods, electrophoretic separations, basic molecular biology, or other specialized histology and biochemistry techniques. Will utilize in vivo models (rats and mice) in experiments and perform small animal surgery and behavioral testing.
  • Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt, ensures compliance with regulatory agencies and committees for laboratory safety and animal care.
  • Provide basic animal husbandry for mouse and rat colonies.
  • Perform other duties as are consonant with this position under the direction of the Supervisor.

Specific Physical Requirements

  • Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs.
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard, operating a pipette, or using fine surgical instruments.
  • Communication skills using the spoken word.
  • Ability to see within normal parameters.
  • Ability to hear within normal range.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.

Starting Salary Range: $15.50 - $26.00 HRLY ($36,700 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
Employee group: Full Time
Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:30-5pm plus rotating weekend animal care
