The Student Nurse Tech is a member of the interdisciplinary team who assists in total client care through implementation of appropriate therapeutic approaches within the therapeutic environment. The SNT provides direct patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Primary responsibilities include the provision of a safe and therapeutic milieu, crisis intervention and coaching in the moment. The SNT is additionally given responsibilities under the RN to augment their education through experiential learning.


Qualifications

The specifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability to meet the minimum requirements for this position.

Education: Enrollment in nursing program with fundamentals of nursing completed

Experience: Experience in a mental health setting preferred.

Licensure/Certification: Successful completion of CPR certification, age-specific training and the current patient aggression management training, including appropriate use of Seclusion and Restraint, within 90 days of employment.

Knowledge/Skills: Thorough knowledge of general and psychiatric nursing processes, therapeutic relationships and processes, age specific growth and development, limit setting, crisis and behavior management, restraint and seclusion procedures and criteria and CPR training. Ability to work with clients that have poor social skills, suffer from substance abuse and a variety of mental illnesses. Knowledge of DCFS mandated reporting requirements. Demonstrate flexibility for reassignment to units providing care to varied populations including children, adolescents, and adults. Effective oral and written communication skills. Skill in organizing and prioritizing workloads to meet deadlines. Must be a self-starter and goal/results-oriented. Ability to use good judgment and to maintain confidentiality of information. Strong customer service skills to external and internal customers. Ability to adhere to safety policies and code procedures react calmly and effectively in emergency situations. Ability to accept direction and adhere to policies and procedures. Ability to work in a fast paced environment. Ability to recommend/take corrective courses of action that would improve the functioning of the department's systems.
