About the role
The Senior Manager, Public Safety and Operations, reports directly to the Deputy Director for Operations, Engineering & Facilities and manages a staff of over 75. The Senior Manager provides leadership and direct management oversight to the museum's safety policies, including but not limited to department response protocols, standard operating procedures and practices along with museum-wide safety and security programs including crisis management, risk identification, threat mitigation and response, fire & life safety, etc. They will provide daily support for public safety staff (60+ Captains, Special Officers, Supervisors, Control Room Operators and Museum Attendant Guards) in conjunction with the Assistant Public Safety Manager. Applies coaching, staff development, strategic planning, and emergency response experience to enhance the overall departmental effectiveness, team morale, and professionalism within a multi-cultural museum environment. They will be an integral part of the Emergency Response Team.
Responsibilities:
Public Safety


  • Manage the Public Safety teams, developing schedules, duty rotations, replacing call-outs, and maintaining administrative systems for staffing
  • Creates and models a team culture dedicated to safety, protocol, and excellence in visitor experience
  • Responsible for the safety and protection of all related museum buildings, collections, equipment, personnel, museum visitors, and trustees
  • Establishes and maintains opening and closing procedures that ensure optimal visitor experience
  • Creates and enforces roll calls protocol to properly secure the collections, exhibitions, programs, and visitor experience
  • Adapts strategies to mitigate emerging threats and develops a culture of proactive threat prevention in accordance with museum policy
  • Supports the implementation of security technology to provide a holistic security assessment of the Museum
  • Establishes a threat response system through the effective deployment of security staff and systems including perimeter protection, collection protection, metal detectors, etc.
  • Maintains open lines of communication with colleagues to ensure efficient day to day operations
  • Coordinates and collaborates with Facilities Operations, Exhibitions, Membership, Visitor Engagement, Special Events, and all other departments within the museum to execute on museum events and programs
  • Manages security contract vendors, with oversight of all procedural implementation, budgeting, scheduling, KPIs, and conflict resolution
  • Assists with investigations including visitor complaints, accidental injuries, lost/found property, art damage, security footage, etc.
  • Addresses and reviews any disciplinary issues concerning staff with Assistant Public Safety Manager and Deputy Director for Operations, Engineering & Facilities
  • Operate with the utmost discretion on staff, guests, and leadership needs; conducts confidential investigations as needed

  • Assists with development and management of department budgets and acts as a steward of museum finances

Custodial Management


  • Oversees custodial teams, managing schedules, overtime and budgets
  • Maintains and models a high level of professionalism, excellence, and pride in the maintenance of the Museum
  • Collaborates with other departments in outlining processes for an efficient and safe environment, cleanliness and adhering to any specific cleaning protocols



Emergency Response


  • Establishes and maintains a safety-first culture by promoting and modeling safe work practices and timely training
  • Develops, maintains, and assists in implementing crisis management and disaster recovery strategies for the museum- including but not limited to readiness assessments, recovery strategy development, and emergency response planning
  • Develops and drives the implementation of the department's risk identification and threat mitigation programs to support and assist the museum's fire & life safety team, threat analysis, and vulnerability management
  • Acts as Museums liaison with local Police, Fire and City Agencies, private securities and law enforcement counterparts in both public and private sectors
  • Oversees First Responders Program, (AED, CPR) including annual training and responding to emergency calls on the floors



Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree preferred, but not required and a minimum of 8 years' managerial experience in the security field, or equivalent
  • Background in law enforcement or military is a plus
  • Holder of Certificate of Fitness for F-89 Fire and Life Safety Director
  • Currently possess or willing to obtain Security License, Certificate of Fitness for Supervision of Fire Alarm (S-95), Certificate of Fitness for Indoor Place of Assembly (F-03), Certificate of Fire and Emergency Drill Conductor (W-07)
  • Demonstrated ability in and knowledge of crisis management and threat/risk identification as well as mitigation actions
  • Possesses organization and time management skills, outstanding interpersonal skills, strong oral and written communication skills, and ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated success in team building and collaborating across departments
  • Demonstrated the ability to work under minimal supervision and manage multiple tasks/ projects simultaneously, while meeting demanding deadlines
  • Knowledge of Computerized Building systems (Security, Fire Alarm, Parking Lot)
  • Knowledge of OSHA Safety regulations
  • Experience in employee relations in a union and non-union environment.
  • Experience in CCTV Systems
  • The scheduled days off for this position are Saturday and Sunday but must be able to work a flexible schedule and evening hours to support after-hours' events and extended operating hours at the Museum and to address unforeseen situations
