About the role

Brooklyn Museum is in the process of undertaking a building-wide program of renovation, construction and energy efficient modernization projects to align its physical environment with its vision for the future. The Facilities Manager will play a critical role in the reimagining and renovation of the Brooklyn Museum's physical spaces. The Facilities Manager reports the Deputy Director for Operations, Engineering & Facilities. They will assist in elevating and maintaining a high standard of excellence in overseeing, managing and coordinating all aspects of the museum operations including but not limited to: Engineering, Operations and maintenance personnel, handyman and trade personnel (Carpenters, Electricians, Painters).

The successful candidate will be a strategic leader and thought partner for modernizing, operating, and monitoring the facilities required to run the museum now and in the future. They will be an integral part of the Emergency Response Team.

Responsibilities:

Building Operations


  • Manages day to day building operations including but not limited to monitoring of the engine room, HVAC systems, electrical systems, the Building Management System, elevators, water treatment programs, special maintenance, and more
  • Responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of the physical plant (chillers, boilers, HVAC, electrical, plumbing)
  • Manages all service contract vendors, with oversight of all procedural implementation, budgeting, scheduling, KPIs, and conflict resolution
  • Manages all vertical transportation equipment ensuring timely response for entrapments
  • Responsible for all regulatory and compliance requirements
  • Oversees mail services department and all shipping and receiving through the loading dock.
  • Partners with the Planning & Architecture Department in systems upgrades and maintenance and LL97 Compliance and long-term road map for emissions reduction


Staff Management


  • Manages all support trades staff, collaborates with departments across the museum to ensure exhibitions, special events, and public programs are all supported by strong and efficient building systems
  • Provides the strategy, vision and continuous improvement of facility personnel to improve the quality-of-service
  • Mentors reporting staff through ongoing coaching and direct feedback regarding both individual performance and professional development
  • Committed to growing diversity, inclusion, and accessibility at every level, with the goals of cultivating equitable experiences for all staff
  • Supports the roll out and training of standard CMMS tools, work orders, BMS processes and systems as they are being implemented
  • Maintains open lines of communication with colleagues to ensure efficient day to day operations
  • Assists with development and management of department budgets and acts as a steward of museum finances
  • Frequently reviews and updates the department's manuals, handbooks, guides, etc.


Emergency Response


  • Establishes and maintains a safety-first culture by promoting and modeling safe work practices and timely training
  • Develops, maintains, and assists in implementing crisis management and disaster recovery strategies for the museum- including but not limited to readiness assessments, recovery strategy development, and emergency response planning
  • Develops and drives the implementation of the department's risk identification and threat mitigation programs to support and assist the museum's fire & life safety team, threat analysis, and vulnerability management
  • Acts as Museums liaison with local Police, Fire and City Agencies, private securities and law enforcement counterparts in both public and private sectors
  • Responsible for the safety and protection of all related museum buildings, collections, equipment, personnel, museum visitors, and trustees


Capital Planning


  • Plays an active role in capital planning- helping to setting timelines, manage projects and track budgets
  • Partners with Conservation, Registrar's Office and Collections Management colleagues to develop and implement a strategy for the museum's sustainability, resiliency planning and energy reduction measures
  • Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above


Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in museum operations, or comparable combination of experience and substantial knowledge of art museums, facilities, and building systems
  • Holder of Certificate of Fitness for Certificate of Qualification for Refrigerating Systems Operating Engineer (Q-01)
  • Currently possess Certificate of Fitness for: Fire and Life Safety Director (F-89), or willing to obtain within 6 months of employment
  • Currently possess or willing to obtain Certificate of Fitness for: Supervision of Fire Alarm (S-95), Supervision of Standpipe System (S-13), Supervision of Foam-Water Sprinkler Systems (S-15), Fuel-Oil Piping and Storage System (P-98)
  • Working knowledge of Building Management Systems (BMS) including fire protection systems
  • Knowledge of chiller plants, boilers, reheats, economizer, humidification, HVAC plant operation, air handling systems, and water treatment systems
  • Knowledge of electrical infrastructure, distribution equipment and emergency power systems
  • Possesses organization and time management skills, outstanding interpersonal skills, strong oral and written communication skills, and ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated success in team building and collaborating across departments
  • Demonstrated the ability to work under minimal supervision and manage multiple tasks/ projects simultaneously, while meeting demanding deadlines
  • Knowledge of OSHA Safety regulations
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Experience in employee relations in a union and non-union environment
  • Experience with or willing to learn about the special requirements of maintenance and repairs on historical property and museums
  • Familiarity with NYC Department of Buildings including annual inspections and permits
  • The scheduled days off for this position are Friday and Saturday but must be able to work a flexible schedule and evening hours to support after-hours' events and extended operating hours at the Museum and to address unforeseen situations


Reports to: Deputy Director for Operations, Engineering & Facilities

Position type: Full-time

Salary: $99,960 USD

Union status: Non-Union

FLSA status: Exempt

Schedule: 35 hours per week, Sunday-Thursday, 9 am-5 pm. Work may occasionally be conducted outdoors, with exposure to varied weather conditions. This role will be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays on occasion.
