Departmental Overview

The Public Service Center is a center within the Dean of Students that brings together students, faculty, and communities to harness their collective wisdom in support of social justice, civic engagement, and transformative social change. Founded in 1967 by a coalition of student service groups, the PSC has grown at a remarkable rate and now supports nearly 200 student leaders and more than 5,000 students who partner with approximately 200 community-based organizations each year. The PSC is committed to growing our next generation of social change leaders. Through our programming and coaching we build student leadership skills, help students find their public service passion and purpose, enhance the capacity of our community partners, and lift up the public service mission of the University. Responsibilities

Manage the student learning & service experience for College Corps, a public service program administered by the Public Service Center in collaboration with the School of Social Welfare and California Volunteers. This role will:

Supervise Engagement Coordinators

  • Supervise three Engagement Coordinator staff members responsible for advising a group of 35 College Corps student Fellows and facilitating a biweekly Pod course.
  • Meet 1:1 weekly with each Engagement Coordinator to support them in managing their workflow as well as in identifying learning and professional development goals and assessing their skills, strengths, and growth areas and finding opportunities to support their learning; document and track goals and progress via the campus wide Achieve Together performance evaluation process
  • Collaborate with the Operations Manager to track Fellow service engagement and problem-solve supports for Fellows who are low on their service hour commitment
  • Supervise Engagement Coordinators in approving their Fellows' campus service and training hours and managing successful approvals by their community partners

Manage College Corps Community Partner Placements

Manage the recruitment and selection of and support for community partner sites hosting College Corps Fellows. The supervisor will take the lead to:

  • Determine criteria to select and evaluate community partnerships
  • Partner with the College Corps Operations Manager to draft outcomes for each community partnership and to communicate data collection needs to each partner and their corresponding Engagement Coordinator; request data twice yearly
  • Communicate program messages to community partner sites
  • Create and co-facilitate a Community Partner Orientation that introduces partners and designated Site Supervisors to College Corps values, expectations, roles of all collaborators, and processes
  • Match Fellows with a community partner placement based on compatible interests, skills, and schedule
  • Coordinate site visits to Community Partners with the respective Engagement Coordinator supporting the Fellows at that site. Ensure each Engagement Coordinator has a foundational relationship to address their partners' basic questions and issues that might come up
  • Schedule regular points of check-in with each community partner to assess the strength of the partnership and to collect feedback and ideas
  • Draft and disseminate at least 2 community partner surveys a year to solicit feedback from partners
  • Communicate with Site Supervisors to share program needs and requirements and to collect necessary information including biweekly timesheet approvals and semesterly performance evaluations of their Fellows
  • Work with community partners to have them collect and report back outcomes on the number of community members served, the number of events held etc

Oversee 1:1 Advising of Fellows

Support Engagement Coordinators in advising their cohorts of Fellows by:

  • Creating a schedule and agenda for 1:1 advising meetings
  • Streamlining processes for scheduling
  • Offering guidelines for ways to hold accountability while also offering a lot of support
  • Developing resources and messaging for common needs/issues Fellows might have
  • Creating and maintaining systems to track attendance, advising meeting notes, and followup that might be needed

Oversee Pod Curriculum Development

Using the current Pod curriculum as a starting pod, refine each Pod agenda to be responsive to the training & reflection needs of College Corps Fellows and the facilitation styles of the Engagement Coordinators.

  • Align activities and content with Fellow Learning Goals
  • Work with Faculty Adviser to secure Course Number, Rooms, and manage enrollment for the Pods
  • Manage details for guest speakers or special pods (such as room reservations, speaker stipends, travel coordination)
  • Prepare Engagement Fellows to facilitate pods by exploring pod content and content choices, practicing activities, and regularly engaging in facilitation practice
  • Observe pods and highlight strengths and areas to change to each Engagement Coordinator; support Engagement Coordinators in growing their skills
  • Solicit regular feedback from Fellows on pods, content, and issues they hope to explore
  • Design, distribute, and analyze Fellow feedback surveys to collect aggregate data on Fellow experience

Supervise Recruitment & Selection of Cohort 4 Fellows

Support the staff team and the current Fellows in recruiting and selecting the next class of College Corps Fellows by:

  • Leveraging current Fellows to share information about College Corps through class announcements, emails to groups/res halls, and tabling
  • Determining selection protocol including application edits, interview questions and process, and criteria for selection

Collaborate across the Public Service Center & the College Corps Community Statewide

  • Attend Public Service Center staff meetings, check-ins, and Center-wide events
  • Collaborate with PSC staff to develop a series of 3-5 Home Groups for Centerwide student leaders to reflect on their service and build skills; this is a space to share/recommend Pod content
  • Represent College Corps at meetings with CA Volunteers, UCOP, and other College Corps convenings
  • Complete required campus trainings and explore ideas in the field of community engaged student learning

Required Qualifications

  • Strong skills in managing campus-community partnerships, particularly partnerships involving undergraduate students.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, both verbally and in writing.
  • Solid organizational skills and ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, exercise initiative and sound judgment when responding to issues, while effectively executing multiple projects with competing deadlines.
  • Ability to be a self-starter, take initiative, and work independently.
  • Ability to think creatively to solve problems and develop solutions.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Ability to attend occasional evening or weekend events.
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with MS Office.
  • Experience working with diverse communities and underrepresented students.

Education/Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with Salesforce or Airtable.
  • Prior experience supervising young professionals.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $87,000.00 - $95,000.00.

  • This is a 12-month, 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), contract position that is eligible for full UC benefits with the possibility of extension.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
  • This is a hybrid position, eligible for up to 40% remote capability.
