About the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University

The Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University has a student body of 1,200 undergraduates, 260 graduate students, and 70 primary and 73 program faculty. In 2023 US News Graduate Program Rankings placed the department as the #1 ranked department in BME in the United States and our Undergraduate Program as the # 2 department in the United States. Job Summary

The Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering () at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia invites applications for a lecturer faculty position in biomedical engineering. Applicants will be considered at all ranks. We are interested in any candidate able to contribute to instructional excellence and ongoing innovation in both our undergraduate and graduate programs. We are especially interested in candidates who can teach courses in at least one of the following four areas:

  • The first is engineering design, especially medical devices, FDA regulation, and human-centered design. We are especially interested in candidates with prior experience teaching engineering capstone courses, and project-centered design courses. For those in this area, professional experience and/or a professional network within biomedical engineering device design is a positive.
  • The second is biomechanics. We are especially interested in candidates with prior experience teaching undergraduate biomechanics courses.
  • The third is data science. We are especially interested in candidates with prior experience teaching statistics, bioinformatics, AI, and/or machine learning courses with applications related to healthcare.
  • The fourth is engineering communication with a focus on effective storytelling as a tool for individual development, leadership, design, and career progress. The broader interest is someone who can develop a culture of storytelling and communications across the undergraduate and graduate curricula. Training or experience with engineering work and culture is a positive but not strictly required.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate an exceptional commitment to the teaching and mentoring of students.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of faculty hired under this ad will be teaching. A typical teaching load is five (5) courses per year, with the majority of teaching assignments being at the undergraduate level. In addition, non-tenure track faculty participate in departmental service and are encouraged to engage in professional service. While research is not required, non-tenure track faculty are supported in pursuing ongoing professional development and research. Interests in engineering education research are equally welcomed. Reductions in teaching load based on education-related departmental responsibilities or participation in sponsored research projects are possible.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates who possess a Ph.D. degree, or an M.S. degree with at least 3 years of professional experience.
  • For the first three areas of need, preferred academic training must be in biomedical engineering, engineering education, another engineering discipline, biology, physiology, or a very closely related field. For the fourth area of need, academic training may be in theater arts, acting, creative writing, communication studies, technical communication, journalism, leadership, or a related field.
  • The ability to teach and mentor a diverse student body.
  • The ability to promote a just, equitable, inclusive, and welcoming educational/work environment.
  • The ability to design and teach curricula that are responsive to a diverse student body.
  • The ability to adopt research-based teaching strategies that support the learning and success of all students.
  • The ability to engage students in experiential learning activities and pedagogy that support student success.
  • The ability to engage in high-impact practices that support deep learning for student success.
  • Experience with undergraduate teaching, especially in engineering courses.
