Job Description Summary

Lifeguarding position at the outside pool at Graylyn Conference Center. Lifeguards must respond according to sound lifeguarding principles to any emergency situation that may occur in the pool or surrounding area.

Job Description

* Pay range depends on previous experience.
* Evenings, weekends, and holidays are required. Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day are requirements for all staff.

Essential Functions

  • Maintains constant surveillance of the pool deck and water.
  • Monitors the pool for hazardous conditions at all times.
  • Ensures personal safety for any individual using the Graylyn Pool facilities including the swimming pool, locker rooms, showers, and surrounding areas through preventative guarding methods.
  • Respond quickly and decisively in emergency situations in the pool or surrounding areas. Perform water rescues and administer first aid and/or CPR when necessary.
  • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available.
  • Monitor facilities for cleanliness and perform daily cleaning of locker rooms.
  • Never leaves the pool unattended; remains alert and focused on the pool area while on duty.
  • Understand and consistently enforce all pool rules and regulations.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Minimum age of 16. Must acquire a work permit if under the age of 18.
  • Current or ability to obtain American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification before position commencement.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Pre-Employment Testing of lifeguarding knowledge and skills:
  • Prerequisites: swim 300 yards continuously, tread water for 2 minutes without hands, and complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
  • Individuals certified through the American Red Cross Lifeguard are subject to skill demonstrations.
  • Individuals certified by another lifeguard certification class must cross-certify with the American Red Cross Lifeguard course.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to pass lifeguard water test; ability to remain alert.
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals; ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  • Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Work is performed primarily outdoors and subject to outdoor environmental conditions.
