Job Description Summary

Supports the research and teaching duties of the chair of chemistry. Assists in the management of the chair's research lab in terms of organization, management and implementation of good safety practices. Performs experiments in the areas of synthetic organic or biochemistry for the preparation of new biologically active molecules or the determination of their redox effects in bacteria and mentors undergraduate research students on similar projects. Teaches one course per semester to support the chair's teaching reduction. This is a fixed-term position with an anticipated end date of June 30, 2025.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Performs research experiments and maintains accurate and complete records of that research.
  • Supervises and contributes to the technical training of undergraduate student researchers.
  • Manages laboratory and maintains a safe working environment.
  • Participates in departmental summer undergraduate training programs (for example NSF-REU).
  • Teaches one college level course in general, organic or biochemistry (lecture or laboratory)/semester.
  • Communicates effectively with faculty, department chair, and students.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ph.D in chemistry or a related area, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Training and experience with modern reaction chemistry (including air and water sensitive reagents), modern chromatography and spectroscopic methods or training and experience in biochemical assays, molecular biology and/or cell culture techniques.
  • Skills in the safe and accurate use of chemical reagents.
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a group as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers including spreadsheets, safety training and online ordering.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Moderate physical activity.
  • The candidate will work with low levels of solvents and hazardous chemicals.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Research background in synthetic organic chemistry or mechanistic biochemistry

Accountabilities:

  • Reports to Department Chair.
  • Responsible for own work.
  • Mentors Undergraduate Research students.

Physical Requirements:

  • Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, lifting, fingering, feeling, talking, hearing. Close visual acuity.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Subject to inside environmental conditions.
  • Subject to hazards (chemicals). Proper personal protective equipment/fume hoods provided and maintained by Environmental Health and Safety.
