About the Position:

Performs a series of skilled tasks in the plumbing trade by assisting more senior-level trade workers in other trades and performs related duties as required or assigned. Leads a team of junior technicians in the absence of the supervisor.

Responsibilities:

Works without supervision and occasionally oversees subordinate workers performing the installation, modification, maintenance and repair work on University plumbing, irrigation, gas systems and equipment to include:



  • Performs complex journey-level work to diagnose defects, install, repair, and maintain piping of all plumbing and gas systems with a high degree of quality and efficiency;
  • Coordinates the work of multiple trade disciplines in large/complex projects;
  • Keeps abreast of current codes and industry changes within the trade;
  • Ensures work is completed on-time and within established budget;
  • Performs preventive and corrective maintenance activities without direction or oversight and within established schedules;
  • Tests, installs, and maintains gas piping and equipment;
  • Maintains wastewater management systems;
  • Prioritizes work, determines the appropriate materials to order, communicates status of repairs with customers, researches different methods of repairs and available materials, and keeps work areas and buildings assigned in good working order;
  • Drives a vehicle to and from locations and keeps vehicle supplied with tools and materials, and keeps it maintained and in an orderly, clean condition;
  • Performs miscellaneous duties such as cleaning and painting equipment and mechanical areas;
  • Picks up materials from suppliers when requested. Inspects areas and reports problems to supervisor;
  • Maintains paperwork and electronic communication including work orders, recording time, orders and includes materials on work orders in an expedient manner;
  • Follows established university and departmental policies and procedures; follows established safety procedures and reports accidents and problems to supervisor promptly; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including snow removal during inclement weather events.


Required Qualifications:



  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Demonstrated progressive experience (generally 5+ years) in the plumbing trade;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of equipment, materials, methods, practices, and tools used in the plumbing trade;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of common hazards and necessary safety precautions;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and ability to apply, local, state, and national plumbing codes;
  • Ability to use necessary hand and power tools and testing equipment;
  • Ability to analyze plumbing systems and controls to determine problems and initiate repairs as directed by supervisor;
  • Masters license or equivalent experience;
  • Cross-connection certificate;
  • Commonwealth of Virginia backflow certification; and
  • Must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator's license that meets all of GMU's requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason's Vehicle Use Policy 1411 . The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver's licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Demonstrated progressive experience (generally 6+ years) in the commercial plumbing trade;
  • Experience supervising or leading a team of junior level technicians;
  • Completion of, or ongoing participation, and/or completion of courses in vocational or technology education; and
  • Completion of supervisory training.
