Physician - Medical Director - Metropolitan Detention Center

UNM Medical Group, Inc. is hiring an Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Family Medicine Medical Director for the Metropolitan Detention Center. Must be board certified in one of these areas. This opportunity is full-time (1.0FTE) position located in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Summary:

The University of New Mexico is seeking a full-time staff physician to serve as the MDC Site Medical Director. The medical director will serve as the responsible physician and health authority required by national standards and the McClendon Agreement. Provides overall supervision for clinical services for the site to ensure appropriate delivery of onsite medical care. Oversees processes for necessary off-site medical care. The MDC Medical Director supervises other on-site regular physicians.

Minimum Job Requirements of a Medical Director:

1. Graduate of an accredited medical school.

2. Fully licensed to practice medicine in the state of employment.

3. Current DEA registration.

4. Board Certified in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine or Emergency Medicine.

5. A minimum of 3 years of administrative or leadership experience

6. Subject to initial and ongoing security clearance requirement

Duties and Responsibilities of a Medical Director:

Administrative

1. Serve as Chairman of the Medical Audit Committee.

2. Consult with medical providers in the community to resolve issues in delivering services to patients.

3. Supervise the clinical services provided by the professional and paraprofessional staff.

4. Ensure and provide on-call services.

5. Annually review and approve clinical protocols, policies and procedures, and medical disaster plan.

6. Provide direction and assistance to the on-site quality improvement program as well as the corporate Continuous Quality and Safety Improvement program including review and action on patient complaints, infection control, peer review and chart audits.

7. Manage referrals to outside healthcare facilities for appropriateness, quality, and continuity of care.

8. Serve as a professional resource and leader for all staff physicians and applicable clinical staff at the facility(s).

9. Assist in screening, interviewing, evaluating credentials and hiring of healthcare providers.

10. Participate in in-service training classes. Represent the healthcare program in discussions with local civic groups or visiting officials as requested.

11. Attend medical, clinical and other meetings, as required.

12. Document all encounters in patient's Medical Record. Ensure all documentation is timed, legible and signed. Ensure all verbal or telephone orders are countersigned as required.

13. Ensure competence in proper technique for basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation and AED use.

14. Participate in onboarding new providers and nursing staff.

15. Attends Medical Staff meetings as required. Provides monthly in-service education of staff as requested.

16. Participates in monthly review of quality of care and chart reviews as requested.

17. Sponsors physician assistants or nurse practitioners as required.

18. Assists in arranging coverage of medical services if unavailable for extended period.

19. Participates in all quality improvement measures including sentinel event review

20. Actively participate in the Utilization Review process and follow proper procedures.

Clinical

1. Provides typical community standard care based on evidenced based medicine for clinical services required including but not limited to sick call, chronic care, History and Physicals, and all emergency care needs. When applicable, visits the infirmary daily and documents encounters in patient's Medical Record as assigned. The goal is to provide the right care, at the right time, and at the right location in compliance with national standards and the McClendon Agreement.

2. Provide emergency treatment on-site and respond appropriately in urgent or emergency situations.

3. Adheres to approved formulary for therapeutic regimens before utilizing non-formulary procedure.

4. Utilizes available in-house resource personnel for treatment or resolution of identified problems before utilizing off-site referral.

5. Provides emergency treatment on-site and responds appropriately in urgent or emergency situations.

6. Demonstrates proper technique for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and related drug therapy with certification as required by credentialing.

7. Supports standards of medical care through adherence to existing policies and procedures. Serves as a resource to other professional or non-professional personnel providing instructions as needed.
