Responsibilities
Howmet Fastening Systems is looking for a Laboratory Technician I to join our Waco, TX team. This position is responsible for working with and supporting engineers on engineering and research and development projects. Essential functions include processing of parts through the factory, testing, data collection, creation of technical documentation, assembly of installation products, operation of various types of machines and equipment, and input on fastener and fastening system designs and improvements. Responsibilities:
- Test fasteners and installation tooling to determine functionality and areas requiring additional development.
- Gather and consolidate test data to support development of product test reports.
- Assist in writing test reports and other technical documents.
- Heat-treat fasteners and installation tooling components utilizing in-house equipment.
- Perform tests on materials, fasteners and installation tooling including clamp, hardness, tensile, shear, corrosion, and life cycle testing.
- Assemble installation tooling and equipment and confirm that tooling and equipment perform per specifications.
- Assist in the design or redesign of prototype fasteners and fastening systems.
- Participate in troubleshooting fastener and installation tooling problems.
- Maintain materials and tooling inventories and perform systems transactions as required.
- Perform quality checks, document results, and participate in nonconformance root cause analysis.
- Set-up and operate mechanical press to test fasteners and record test results.
- Assist Weld Engineer with set up and testing of welded samples.
- Work closely with and support Design Engineers on a wide range of technical projects.
- Perform all work to established quality standards and properly care for tools, machinery, and equipment.
- Prepare samples and tests for hardness, grain flow, and other properties.
- Prepares and follows up with external labs for testing of fasteners and materials.
- Document and summarize test results.
- Maintain records of test data and results.
- Maintains, organizes and repairs tools and test equipment in the R&D lab.
- Keeps R&D lab in a presentable manner.
- Prepares for and assists with product demonstrations.
- Maintains, organizes and keeps inventory of engineering materials, fasteners and equipment.
- Maintain work area in a clean and orderly manner through application of 5-S principles.
- Wear required personal protective equipment and perform activities in accordance with safety and environmental standards.
- Ensure that all work activities are performed in accordance with established safety and environmental standards.
- Maintains full compliance and conducts all activities in accordance with Company policies and procedures.
- Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum two (2) years of experience as Lab Technician or related field.
- Employees must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
- This position is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) which requires U.S. person status. ITAR defines U.S. person as an U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.
- An associate degree in mechanical technology or a related field is desirable.
Skills:
- Record-keeping and documentation of work performed, daily logs, and special records of key information.
- Good communication skills. Technical writing skills are a strong plus.
- Machining and mechanical assembly skills.
- Teamworking to collaborate with Quality and Engineering Departments to support and perform specific activities.
- Able to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and sketches.
- Able to use micrometers, scales, calipers, comparators and related precision measurement devices.
- Able to use computer systems and software, including Microsoft Office products, Lotus Notes, and BaaN ERP software
- Ability to use Quality and Engineering test equipment.
Work Environment:
- Waco production area, Quality department, R&D area and office area environments
Physical Demands:
- Capable of lifting and carrying items weighing up to forty pounds on a regular basis. Ability to stand in place and/or walk for extended periods. Visual acuity sufficient to perform detailed mechanical operations.
