The Shelby location is Clearwater Paper's newest consumer products facility, boasting two paper mills located on 400 acres with over 600 talented employees. We are proud to produce a variety of high-quality premium and ultra-premium bathroom tissue, household paper towels, and napkins for major retail outlets throughout the United States. Our state-of-the-art technology includes 10 converting lines, 54 laser-guided vehicles, and 2 paper machines producing large quantities at high speed. Shelby, North Carolina is a quaint community located between bustling downtown Charlotte and scenic Asheville. The town is a stone's throw from Gastonia, Belmont, and Kings Mountain. What you will do

The Paper Machine Entry Level Operator is the first level position in the Paper Machine department, focused primarily on observing and monitoring the paper process at the Dry End of the Machine. This position often works as an assistant to the Dry End Operator.



  • Maintain core delivery to the paper machine
  • Monitor and maintain roll movement through conveyors and wrappers on the paper machine
  • Operate the wrapper machine to poly wrap finished rolls
  • Maintain the label machine and label all paper rolls correctly
  • Interface with Laser Guided Vehicles (LGV's) for parent roll pickup
  • Handle all equipment within the position's responsibility
  • Assist during maintenance outages
  • Maintain quality standards
  • Hold self and others to a high level of safety standards, ensuring workplace safety policies are upheld and safety rules are followed (lockout/tagout procedures, confined spaces, appropriate PPE)
  • Participate as needed in safety incidents and help investigate the root cause
  • Maintain a clean working environment by complying with procedures and housekeeping responsibilities
  • Pick up debris/excess tissue, plastic wrap, etc.
  • Sweep and use air hoses to blow down tissue particles from in and around the machine


What you will need
To be successful in this position, we are looking for candidates with the following:



  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent (required)
  • Paper manufacturing experience (preferred)
  • Understand and comply with all manufacturing safety procedures including personal protective equipment (required)
  • Able to work in a physically demanding environment including temperature extremes, loud noise, avoiding slipping, tripping, and falling hazards
  • Physically capable of manual labor that includes bending, walking, sitting, and climbing in and around machinery and equipment for an entire 12-hour shift
  • Able to lift, up to 40 lbs. frequently, between 40 and 50 lbs. occasionally, and over 50 lbs. minimally. When lifting 50 lbs. and above, Operate or will use team lifting and overhead crane assistance.
  • Work environment includes exposure to compressed air, steam, lubrication oil, dust, and hydraulic fluid.

    Example of a rotating shift schedule:
    Day 1: 6:00 am - 6:30 pm
    Day 2: 6:00 am - 6:30 pm
    Day 3: 6:00 pm- 6:30 am
    Day 4: 6:00 pm - 6:00 am
    4 days off
