Departmental Overview

The Department of History is rated one of the top academic programs nationally and globally. As one of the largest teaching departments in the College of Letters and Science, enrolling over 8000 students in 150 courses each year, our courses serve campus and department graduation requirements across the University. The department is comprised of 50 tenure-track faculty, 30 emeriti, and 11 career staff. Annual hires include 15-20 visiting instructors, 25-30 visiting scholars, approximately 230 academic student employee appointments, and 10-15 casual employees. With approximately 100 graduate students, 250 undergraduate majors, and 100 minors, students in our program are able to select from a broad range of fields of study. The History department is committed to supporting a large and diverse population of students. Over the past 5 years, the department has seen a significant increase in graduate and undergraduate students of color.

This role is responsible for administering admissions, professional development, and alumni support. Manages events across the full student life cycle, including admissions & recruitment management, career development, orientation, commencement, and alumni development for both graduate and undergraduate communities.

Provides analytical and financial support as it relates to graduate admissions and professional development. Serves as a liaison between campus units for a range of student services matters and support unique and large student services cases in History.

Responsibilities

Recruitment and Admissions

  • Responsible for all aspects of the department's Graduate Admissions process.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for admission inquiries and process orientation questions from prospective students as well as department faculty.
  • Identify and track department best practices related to application development and review process, prospective applicant management and communications, funding strategy, and recruitment tactics.
  • Train faculty on departmental and divisional procedures, utilize knowledge from campus wide trainings to introduce departmental process improvement, and manage all admissions related technology including SLATE.
  • Support the faculty Vice Chair for Admissions on all administrative aspects of the selection process.
  • Make recommendations on funding, admissions practices, and ways to enhance the diverse portfolio of our admitted students to the Vice Chair for Admissions, Director of Student Services, and the Department Chair.
  • Advise prospective students and faculty on student related visa and immigration compliance.
  • With an emphasis on enhancing recruitment and yield, implement all departmental admissions and recruitment events including Visit Days.
  • Serve as primary administrative liaison with Graduate Division regarding admissions policies, procedures, and resources.
  • Responsible for writing and editing instructional materials and guides, and for providing data and reports to the Vice Chair for Admissions.
  • Supports the annual review of update considerations for the multi-year funding plan, reviewing the data elements that factor into financial calculations and identifying new or ongoing student funding needs.
  • Collaborate with the Undergraduate Advisor on all recruitment and admissions initiatives at the Undergraduate level including participating in recruitment fairs, coordinating tours, and answering prospective student inquiries.

Career Counseling and Alumni Development

  • Provide individual career advice to graduate and undergraduate students in History.
  • Lead a series of existing workshops focused on preparing PhDs for the job market, and preparing undergraduates for graduate school, utilizing the standards and norms specific to the history field.
  • Adapt programmatic needs to reflect evolving student needs and develop a series of professional development workshops and online resources to serve all populations in the department.
  • Partner with graduate students to plan mock job talks.
  • Liaise with campus career services on their suite of programs and services, with attention paid to both academic and non-academic pathways.
  • Plan and implement events and initiatives that attract alumni involvement, including but not limited to History Homecoming, professional development activities, and partnerships with division/campus alumni development offices. Develop and maintain a database of undergraduate and graduate alumni.

Student Services Equity Advisor and Program Management Support

  • Under the direction of the Faculty Equity Advisor, and in partnership with Admissions Committee Chair, and Vice-Chair for Graduate Affairs, support implementation of short and long-term diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) strategies for a range of program objectives, including admissions goals.
  • Serve as graduate division liaison and policy expert, supporting faculty leadership in implementing graduate division equity objectives into the admissions processes.
  • Generate relevant reports on diversity and equity trends that assist department leadership and committees with relevant decisions.
  • Partner with University services that provide support to students in an effort to foster an equitable, diverse and inclusive community.
  • Responsible for directly supporting the Director of Student Services on various departmental projects including diversity initiatives, optimizing student services communications, and leading the annual review of the student services event calendar to align budget, workload considerations, and evolving student needs.
  • Provide project management support for complex events such as orientations and commencement.
  • Represents the department student services team on divisional and campus wide committees.
  • Identify organizational and operational challenges related to student services support and recommend solutions at the department level.

Professional Development

  • Attend campus wide graduate advising meetings, and track and report back to the department about any changes related to graduate affairs.
  • In consultation with supervisor, identify and implement annual professional development goals.
  • Examples might include special projects, or participating in professional associations, training programs, or campus committees.
  • Workshops and seminars may focus on topics such as professional skills development, planning in higher education, and developing and maintaining expertise on various computer systems and computer software.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques and demonstrated successful experience advising faculty, staff, and students on complex graduate student affairs policies.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including demonstrated experience in multicultural competencies and working in teams; highly developed oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability in problem identification, reasoning, and ability to develop original ideas to solve problems and influence change.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of working with diverse student populations, for example, students with disability, neurodiversity, cross cultural, LGBTIQ+ and an understanding of intersectional factors of students engaging with the program.
  • Commitment to strategies to support diversity.
  • In-depth knowledge of post-degree employment opportunities and practices.
  • Demonstrated organizational, analytical, planning, and project management skills.
  • Knowledge of and/or can quickly learn common University-specific online systems including Student Information System (SIS) and CalAnswers.
  • Excellent computer skills in MS Office Suite (especially Word and Excel), Box, and can quickly learn campus Google tools (bMail, BCal, drive, forms).
  • Ability to exercise consummate discretion regarding management of confidential student records and privileged information within the department.
  • Knowledge of and/or can quickly learn University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
  • Knowledge of and/or can quickly learn UC programs, career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs and expectations, recruiting and staffing methods, and employment trends.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling process, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of needs assessment theory, processes, and practice; workshop and program design.
  • In-depth knowledge of post-degree employment opportunities and practices, with preference for knowledge background of the field of History or related field.

Salary & Benefits

This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for full UC Benefits.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $67,000.00 - $95,000.00.
