The Department of Recreational Sports offers members of the UC Berkeley community an extraordinary experience to live active and meaningful lives while on campus.

Programs and services range from group fitness, aquatics, adventure trips, drop-in fitness and recreation, intramural sports, sport clubs, personal training, WorkFit, and many other activities. Recreational Sports is enhanced by its indoor and outdoor facilities, including three indoor locations, four pools, five tennis courts, and an outdoor adventure center at the Berkeley Marina.

Responsibilities

Manages the daily administrative operations of the Rec Sports Operations and Services unit. Reports to the Rec Sports Associate Director- Operations and Services. Has autonomy to analyze and resolve problems, and determine appropriate action. Supervises Rec Program leaders/instructors. Provides recommendations for the development of program budgets and typically, oversees implementation and monitoring of budget, inventory, and other resources. Makes recommendations for policy changes.

  • Plans, organizes, and implements recreational programs.
  • Supervises employee performance, career development, and adherence to job standards.
  • Selects, trains, and supervises staff professional-level staff.
  • Schedules use of recreational facilities and advises and assists individuals and groups with problems related to scheduled recreational activities.
  • Supervises inventory, storage, budget, and maintenance of sports and recreational equipment.
  • May be assigned responsibility for leading groups of participants in a variety of social, cultural, recreational, and physical activities.
  • Ensures compliance with assigned budget and makes budget recommendations to manager for assigned activities/programs.
  • Implements program policies and procedures.
  • Assists with appropriate public relations and promotional programs.
  • Maintains files, records, and prepares reports as necessary.
  • Reports safety issues to appropriate personnel and recommends improvements.
  • In the absence of the supervisor, assumes temporary responsibility for day-to -day operations of the Customer Service Center and Scheduling Office.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of program activity and industry best practices.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization, internally and externally in non-routine situations.
  • Uses highly developed and creative problem-solving skills to deliver and foster a strong service orientation, program management, and sound judgment and decision-making; uses strong critical thinking skills to develop original ideas, in a varied and challenging environment.
  • Strong client service-minded focus, entrepreneurial spirit, and creative thinking skills.
  • Thoroughly demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Thorough proficiency in the use of basic computer applications relevant to job duties.
  • Strong knowledge of campus policies and procedures.

Education/Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Licenses/Certification:

  • Red Cross CPR is required.
  • Standard First Aid Training Certification is required.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $61,000.00 - $73,100.00
