The Student Learning Center serves a global community of learners as they navigate the cultural expectations and academic rigor of UC Berkeley. Key Highlights:

  • Founded in 1973, serves as the primary academic support unit for UC Berkeley.
  • Serves 12,000 undergraduates annually, approximately 30% of undergraduate student population, in 12 academic and co-curricular programs.
  • Employs 18 professional staff with disciplinary expertise, 300+ trained undergraduate tutors, and 20 graduate student instructors.
  • Serves as the liaison between Berkeley administration and the DeCal program, a partnership that adds over 300 additional courses to the university's curriculum.
  • Manages Berkeley's Summer Bridge Program, a six-week academic residential program for entering freshmen.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct service to students in a variety of program formats, including one-on- one coaching, topical workshops, and adjunct courses.
  • Assists and/or collaborates with program director in the supervision and training of peer staff.
  • Designs and/or supports program outreach; serves as liaison to specific programs, student service departments, or advising units.
  • Applies and implements innovative academic support service models to support and enhance student learning, academic success, and intellectual development.
  • Assists and/or collaborates with program director designing and piloting new programming.
  • Reaches out to faculty, advising units, academic departments, and other student service units to assess students' needs.
  • Keeps abreast of curricular and policy shifts in major/minor requirements and how they impact student reading and learning demands; keeps abreast of literature on academic coaching and learning center research.
  • Serve on Center and campus-wide committees.

Required Qualifications

  • Experienced knowledge of specific learning theory, learning styles, affective issues, academic issues, and socio-cultural/linguistic issues in applying academic support to students.
  • Knowledge of how learning skills issues apply to a research institution.
  • Knowledge of academic curricula.
  • Knowledge in designing and implementing learning and pedagogical models.
  • Knowledge of strategies in critical thinking, reading, writing, note taking, test taking, time management, and goal setting.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Skills in judgment and decision-making.
  • Problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of current research and theoretical models that influence the application and delivery of academic services (e.g., discipline specific, student-population specific).
  • Multicultural competencies, knowledge and experience working and interacting effectively with diverse groups of staff, faculty, and student populations.
  • Knowledge of program development, data gathering, assessment, and evaluation skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of NCAA policies, rules, and regulations.

Salary & Benefits

This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) exempt career position, which is paid monthly and eligible for full UC Benefits.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $73,100.00 - $93,100.00.
