Position description

The Ashworth Lab at UCSF is seeking applications for Junior Specialist. Under the direction of a postdoctoral fellow in the lab, the junior specialist will contribute to multiple exciting ongoing drug discovery projects. The selected candidate will be trained in a variety of assays including basic biochemistry, mammalian tissue culture, novel immunology approaches and CRISPR editing. This individual will also have the opportunity to learn about drug discovery, chemistry and pharmacology through our joint efforts with academic and industry partners. Data will need to be collected, verified, recorded and compiled in support research and the incumbent candidate will have the opportunity to co-author publications. Our lab is well funded and incredibly collaborative, and this is a great opportunity for anyone interested in gaining additional research experience prior to pursuing a biomedical sciences PhD.

Job responsibilities may include but are not limited to:



  • Mammalian tissue culture, cell-based assays, FACS analysis and sorting.
  • CRISPR gene editing.
  • Genetic manipulation human or mouse immune cells.
  • In vitro or in vivo evaluation of modified immune cells.
  • Basic biochemistry including molecular cloning and protein analysis.
  • Assist with preclinical animal studies.
  • Statistical data analysis using GraphPad prism or other software.


Required qualifications:



  • Desire to learn new techniques, think critically, analyze results, and plan experiments.
  • Organized, self-motivated, and enthusiastic about science and medicine.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to troubleshoot experiments.
  • Specialists appointed at the Junior rank must possess a bachelor's degree (or equivalent degree) at the time of hire.
  • Applicants' materials must list current and/or pending qualifications upon submission.


Preferred qualifications:



  • Mammalian tissue culture experience.
  • Basic molecular biology techniques.
  • Experience with simple biochemical assays.
  • Experience or willingness to work with mice.
