Departmental Overview

The Public Service Center, a department in the Associate Vice Chancellor/Dean of Students portfolio within Student Affairs, provides essential programs, services and resources for co-curricular and curricular student service engagements at UC Berkeley. The Center's mission is to connect people through shared learning and collaborative action for social justice and transformative social change. The department's primary focus is on student leadership development using a social change model which guides students through three development areas - knowledge of self, interpersonal and group management skills development, and community engagement. Additionally its work is guided by 5 core values: experiential and reflective learning; collaboration & commitment, community wisdom; student agency; and equity and social justice. This position reports to the Associate Dean of Students and Executive Director of the Public Service Center.

Responsibilities

  • Supervision: Directly supervise 3 professional staff who in turn work with approximately 80 student leaders. Develop "Individual Development Plans" with each staff member, meet regularly with each staff member to provide direct supervision and advising, and provide written annual performance evaluations.
  • Center Management: Work in partnership with the Executive Director to support Public Service Center (PSC) staff with the general management of the PSC, particularly as it pertains to student education and curricular development. Responsibilities would include:
    • Coordinate the campus Risk Management Guidelines for Experiential Learning: advise faculty and program staff across campus, respond to inquiries from external campuses, conduct Risk Management trainings for faculty and students, maintain websites.
    • Work collaboratively with the Executive Director and the Director of Strategic Initiatives in developing short and long term plans that enable the Center to live into its vision as a world class Center for engaged learning and scholarship. This will include working in partnership to develop faculty, community and student engagement strategies, support community building events, and cultivate a supportive Center working environment for staff and students.
    • Manage the annual process for selecting faculty, staff, and student awardees for the Chancellor's Public Service Awards. Work with the Operations Officer, the Chancellor's office, and the Executive Director to create and review the application process and coordinate the submission of nominations; select faculty, staff, and student reviewers, and plan the annual event.
    • Support the Executive Director as needed with donor relations and fundraising.
  • Communications: Point person for all communications work related to the Center. This includes:
    • Serving as the primary liaison with the SA Communications Department for all PSC general communications.
    • Working in partnership with the Operations Office to ensure the website is regularly updated.
    • Managing and supporting internal student facing communications such as the bi weekly student leader email and the monthly Center-wide newsletter.
  • Data Collection and Assessment: Manage Center-wide data collection and analysis, including overseeing all Center data collection, developing of student learning outcomes, ensuring program-specific student assessments and program evaluations, and analyzing and reporting on all Center data.
  • Campus Leadership: Represent the PSC within key DOS departmental, SA Divisional, and campus wide meetings and initiatives.
  • Professional Development: Keep abreast of current literature and developments in the field of Student Affairs and related professional organizations. Attend pertinent conferences and conventions and present information when requested for shared development. Participate on department and campus committees, programs, and projects as assigned. Participate in research relevant to student development and student affairs.

Required Qualifications

  • Excellent political acumen demonstrated by the ability to successfully navigate complex networks of relationships and to work with a high level of cultural competence and sensitivity to achieve departmental and division-wide goals.
  • Outstanding communication skills demonstrated by the ability to interact comfortably with a wide range of diverse people, including professional staff, students, faculty, parents, system-wide colleagues, community partners, and funders. This includes the ability to write clearly and concisely in different styles as appropriate to the audience.
  • Superior judgment, demonstrated by the ability to balance numerous demands, evaluate competing priorities, and adjust planning as needed.
  • Exceptional critical thinking skills demonstrated by the ability to analyze information, evaluate results, and facilitate resolution of conflict.
  • Significant administrative and college student leadership programming experience (design, implementation, assessment and evaluation)
  • Excellent organizational skills including the ability to oversee a wide variety of activities, define problems, propose and implement effective solutions and balance competing priorities.
  • Strong counseling skills essential to mediate conflict, problem-solve, and respond appropriately to student concerns and community needs.
  • Strong meeting facilitation and training delivery skills.
  • Strong strategic planning and budgeting skills demonstrated by successful experience in directing resources toward accomplishment of strategic objectives as well as a successful track record of analysis, program evaluation, budget review, and risk management.

Education/Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite, Google software applications essential. Salesforce knowledge preferred.
  • 2 or more years of supervisorial experience preferred.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $85,000.00 - $95,000.00.

  • This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
  • This is a hybrid position, eligible for 40% remote capability.
