The Team:

Mainframe Engineering - Performance & Capacity management Team will be responsible for monitoring the mainframe performance, investigating any overheads, and planning the overall mainframe CPU capacity.

Job Description:

The Mainframe Performance and Capacity management engineer (also called as a Performance & Capacity Planner) will be in defining and evaluating z/OS-based performance data as well as establishing trends and workload forecasts. They must also be well-versed in writing policies and defining classes for WLM. A working knowledge of real time monitoring tools is also required. Experience with developing or modifying SAS/MXG programs to analyze z/OS source data (SMF, RMF) and/or scripting to analyze Linux system and Informatica logs is a big plus .and business partners as needed.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
  • Provide technical support
  • Investigate and resolve routine or common incidents and issues generated from the Service Desk, application development teams, subsystem support teams and end users with little supervision.
  • Participate in the support, coordination and execution of scheduled maintenance activities including IPLs, DR tests, etc.
  • Be available for project and maintenance activities outside normal working hours, as needed.
  • Experience with performance tuning of systems, practicing capacity planning activity during system up-gradation and pro-actively managing capacity planning on regular basis.
  • Clear understanding about SMF and analyzing and drawing insights from SMF data Processing.
  • Experience with Workload Load Manager (WLM), Parallel Simplex configurations, multiple LPAR environments, and experience in capacity/performance reporting and modelling.
  • Must have system performance understanding of mainframe components covering the areas of ZOS, JES, CICS, DB2 and IMS.
  • Thorough knowledge in Performance analysis & tuning for ZOS operating environment / DASD / Tape storage systems
  • Ability to perform diagnostics and perform RCA [ Root cause analysis].
  • Capacity Planning for Processor, ASD, and on physical processors (CECs) for various customers.
  • Knowledge about forecasting for processors, coupling facilities, DASD, Virtual Tape, and Tape in a complex.
  • Provide technical guidance to internal contacts in the design of infrastructure solutions that meet business needs and perform to engineered specifications.

Essential criteria:
  • 10+ Years of Experience
  • Must have SAS skills and working knowledge of SMF mainframe data
  • Must have experience in RMF, Omegamon and be familiar with the IBM SCRT process
  • Knowledge of IBM Z Performance and Capacity Analytics and experience in WLM policies.
  • Support and tuning of the development and production environments to ensure healthy practices, tuning and performance benchmarking
  • Performance tuning and capacity planning, including ways to reduce I/Os, CPU Time, MSUs, and MIPs, APA, SMF and Pivotor
  • Working knowledge of JCL, TSO, JES2, ISPF, SDSF, SMS, HSM, RMM, Parmlib
  • Excellent Communication skills
Desirable Criteria:
  • Experience with Communications Server, DB2, IMS & CICS
  • Experience with IBM's Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex (GDPS) software
  • Experience providing support within a multi-LPAR, multi-site sysplex environment.
  • Strong troubleshooting, Vendor coordination and knowledge on ITIL framework
Hours of work:
  • Mon - Fri - Normal Business Hours 8AM to 5PM CT with some flexibility
  • Must be willing and available for project and maintenance activities outside normal working hours, as needed
  • Flexibility to meet business needs as required

Compensation offered for this role is$82,000-$134,800 per yearand is based on experience and qualifications.

The candidate(s) offered this position will be required to submit to a background investigation, which includes a drug screen.
