Responsibilities

Introduction:

Want to be part of our nation's highest national security priorities? The Strategic System Engineering department is seeking a highly motivated System Engineer for our Odon, Indiana office, which is located just outside the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane in Westgate@Crane. This office supports a growing technological ecosystem, boasting over sixty high-tech companies, a leading government lab, cutting-edge academic research, and over 5,000 technical professionals. The facility is situated just south of Bloomington, Indiana, rated by Livability in '21 as one of the top places to live in the U.S. As a team member, you will be on the ground floor as Draper builds out engineering capability to design next-generation strategic missile guidance and control systems that operate in hostile military and space environments, all while expanding our nation's preeminence in microelectronics for national security. You will be a key member of Draper's nationally distributed experts, called upon by our government and academic partners to produce exquisite and robust solutions to some of our nation's most important technical challenges.

The Strategic Weapon Systems group at Draper is seeking a systems engineer with broad technical skills to work within multi-disciplinary teams to conceptualize, planning and management of technical programs, develop, and/or evaluate robust weapon system solutions for the war fighter, including (but not limited to) advanced strategic weapon systems and enabling guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) technology.

A successful candidate will be/have:

    Strong leadership skills and experience with planning and management of multi-disciplinary engineering activities.

  • Highly motivated to support the delivery of technology solutions that are of strategic importance to the nation;
  • Dedicated to developing the in-depth mission and technology domain expertise that enable realization of such solutions for complex systems;
  • Capable of planning and executing tasks as an individual contributor on a multi-disciplinary team as well as leading teams as necessary;
  • Proficient in systems engineering methods/practice for the development of integrated hardware/software systems;
  • A skilled communicator, able to distill and brief complex technical concepts to senior internal and external management.

Tasking may include: identification of customer needs, requirements analysis and flow-down, system concept/architecture development (including analysis of alternatives), system modeling/design, evaluation of system robustness, verification/test planning, development of systems engineering documentation, model development, vehicle and mission-level simulation development, performance assessment, documentation of analysis results, and presentation of results to both internal and external stake-holders.

The individual should be a highly motivated self-starter with willingness to learn and participate in a dynamic team environment while supervising junior and senior engineers. The opportunity to work as part of team developing a state-of-the-art GN&C system will provide exposure to a wide range of advanced technologies, including inertial sensors, precision electronics, and advanced algorithms.



Qualifications

Applicants must have the following key qualifications:

  • An M.S. degree or higher in a relevant engineering discipline;
  • 15+ years of professional experience working with avionics or defense systems;
  • Practical experience with systems engineering for defense systems;
  • Experience in system modeling and model-based systems engineering;
  • Strong presentation skills and the ability to articulate complex technical ideas.

Any of the following additional qualifications are highly desirable:

  • Demonstrated experience in cyber offensive and defensive methods;
  • Experience in the design of robust (including cyber resilience) integrated hardware/software avionics systems;
  • Prior experience in the domain of strategic weapon systems is strongly preferred;
  • Foundational knowledge and/or practical experience with radiation physics and effects, as pertaining to the design of avionics systems;
  • Experience with guidance system development for military applications.

Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
