Assistant, Associate or Full Project Scientist - Host-Microbe Systems and Therapeutics

The Department of Pediatrics (http://www.pediatrics.ucsd.edu) and the Chavez Lab at the University of California, San Diego are committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body and are seeking Assistant, Associate, or Full Project Scientists.

The Project Scientist will have a particular focus on diseases of the cerebellum working with several models of Spinocerebellar Ataxia, including performing studies to uncover the genes that are critical for Purkinje and granular cell survival within the disease context, and how cell-cell interactions are involved in the degeneration process.

The Project Scientist will be expected to conduct independent research in collaboration, as well as work on existing and new research programs in the group. In addition, the Project Scientist will work on the application of molecular biology, neuroscience, and functional genomics to the study of genetic regulators of cellular responses to neurodegenerative disease stressors.

In addition to research, the Project Scientist will be required the publication of research results, present at conferences, participation in group meetings, supervision of technicians, grant writing, and submission of research reports to sponsors.

The appointment will be at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Project Scientist level based on background and years of experience.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on the University of California pay scales.

Candidates must have a PhD in a field related to molecular biology.

Candidates must also have experience performing collaborative research and evidence of high-quality first-author publications in leading subspecialty or general science journals.

Candidates with experience designing and performing high-throughput CRISPR-based screens, analyzing the resulting data, and familiarity with animal models of neurodegeneration, their manipulation, and the use of CRISPR within in vivo contexts are preferred. Candidates with previous experience building novel technologies are also preferred.
