Winemaking Planner

Position Purpose

The Winemaking Planner ensures all cellar processing requirements are scheduled and documented, while making efficient use of cellar resources and capacity. This role translates Winemaking's detailed and general requirements into specific instructions for Cellar operations. Coordinates with Case Goods Production Planner, Grape Scheduling Planner, Cellar Coordinator (Purchaser), Cellar leadership and Bulk Shipping Coordinator to a produce an integrated, detailed production schedule. Provides detailed work packages to the Cellar for weekly work based upon the production schedules. Works closely with Cellar Production Coordinators and Cellar leadership and produces plan adjustments as needed. Provides technical support to the Planning Administrator for production plan interpretation and authorizes processing plan deviations.

Essential Duties

  • Develops and maintains a 2-week Production Schedule , balancing operational efficiencies with inventory and service objectives
  • Facilitates a daily cross-functional production order huddle, to include but not limited to wine making and cellar operations, providing visibility to mid-term process order statuses
  • Prioritizes, produces, monitors and communicates weekly detailed cellar production schedules based upon input from Winemaking, Marketing Customer Service, and all planning department areas; validates weekly cellar schedule with Cellar Master/Cellar Operations Manager or Cellar representative
  • Resolves detailed production conflicts based upon the production plan; makes changes or corrections to Production Orders and adjusts production plan as needed
  • Monitors Production Order completions and releases next step in processing flow as queued on the production plan and approved by Winemaking, including bottling and export shipping filtrations
  • Produces and reviews Cellar production orders as per established winemaking criteria
  • Provides daily updates to the weekly plan to Cellar Production Coordinators ; responsible for effective communication of plan and adjustments
  • Aims to reduce production complexity through efficient planning and monitoring of blend components, schedule and tank utilization
  • Supports import and export of wine with Key Account Managers, Winemaking and Cellar Operations, providing clear information related to wine readiness and tank availability
  • Maintains and analyzes KPI's related to inventory stages and work funnel flow to help improve the stability of work to operations
  • Oversees work queue to Cellar Operations in the execution of the daily process orders including record keeping functions as they relate to wine inventory and production.
  • Serves as back up to Winemaking Scheduler



Additional Duties during Harvest/Essential Job Functions (E)



  • Establishes harvest season processing plans, goals, and guidelines in conjunction with winemaking criteria, programs, and available resources
  • Coordinates the receiving of grape volume against receiving capacity with Grower Relations
  • Writes and reviews Production Orders for grape receiving, fermenter ingredient additions, and solids management
  • Creates lot numbers for new vintage grapes, juice, and wines
  • Writes drain and press and rack out of Drop Zone Production Orders



Red Wine Planner Harvest Duties, as requested/Essential Job Functions



  • Works closely with Winemaking to determine which fermenters are ready to press
  • Responsible for updating the daily grape delivery schedule and communicates which varieties, Growers, how many loads and which SPA tanks to use for the following days grape receiving
  • Monitors and schedules processing within the established SPA tank allocations
  • Maintains the fermenter/drop zone tank boards on an excel spreadsheet to track residency time in SPA tanks
  • Meets on daily basis with Grower Relations staff to schedule growers for grape delivery to maximize tank utilization
  • Communicates any changes that affect grape receiving, tank selections or other areas associated with grape receiving to avoid errors or re-direct grape loads
  • Collects production data to include: processing capacity values, equipment utilization, informational support to Winemaking and Cellar Master

Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience



  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, or Supply Chain preferred
  • 3-5 years progressive experience working in a supply chain environment
  • 3-5 years experience in large scale winery



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



  • Demonstrated high attention to detail
  • Understand the Food Safety and Quality Management System and related activities, including the ISO Food Safety & Quality Policy
  • Must have good communication skills and proven problem-solving ability
  • Possessknowledge of supply chain activities, as well as solid operational knowledge of packaged goods or the wine industry
  • Possessworking knowledge of all cellar procedures such as crushing, fermenting, pressing, wine movements, topping, barrel work, filtration, sterilization of equipment, bottling, etc.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple inputs and variables for a best-case business scenario
  • Strong expertise with MS Office Suite with ability to build and update advanced Excel workbooks

  • Exposure to varying levels of dust, chemicals, fumes, gases, and noisy equipment
