Research Assistant
The Department of Mental Health is seeking casual employees who can support the data collection efforts of school-based research activities as a Research Assistant. This includes assisting with the collection of parental consent forms; elementary student survey administration; and conducting classroom observations enrolled in research projects being conducted with the Anne Arundel County Public School system in Maryland. Incumbents may be asked to assist with the collection of student consent forms and to proctor the administration of online student surveys. Incumbents will be asked to collect data using the Assessing School Settings: Interactions of Students and Teachers (ASSIST) observational measure. Classroom observations will be conducted in elementary school classrooms in 2021 and elementary and high school classrooms in the spring of 2022.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Will work with research coordinator to assist with consent form collection from teachers (in 2021 only) and overseeing/supporting student survey administration (in 2021 and Spring 2022).
  • Will be required to complete ASSIST training and pass a reliability assessment.
  • Scheduling and completing computerized classroom observations
  • Engage in weekly supervision calls.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline. Some related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Coursework in either Education or Social Science Research.
  • Experience with Education.
  • Experience with Social Science Research.
  • Experience with online data collection methods (e.g., REDCap).


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Ability to use and perform basic troubleshooting of technology including tablets is essential.
  • Exceptional organization skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Reliable transportation to travel to and between schools in Anne Arundel County, MD.
  • Availability to work at least 2 days per week during school hours (Monday-Friday, 7:00 am - 4:00 pm).


Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:
  • Should you be selected for hire, you will need to complete the ASSIST certification (i.e., a training and reliability assessment) to properly perform the role. Training and assessment hours will be paid for. Paid observational work is contingent on becoming ASSIST certified.


Physical Requirements:
  • Be able to stand on your feet for an extended period of time.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
