Compensation Specialist
We are seeking a Compensation Specialist who is a critical member of the University-wide Compensation team and performs general administrative and classification activities to provide optimal client support. This role is responsible for classifying and processing positions in defined salary levels (levels 1-3), where job classification and salary ranges have been established. Related responsibilities include processing ISRs related to the position classification process, to ensure timely and efficient support of client areas.

The Compensation Specialist researches, gathers, and compiles data related to salary and pay practices surveys, to support benchmarking efforts, as well as data gathering and research related in pay equity reviews. This role may also assist with auditing efforts to ensure data integrity, along with support of large special projects related to compensation programs. The position is approved for remote work and requires a reliable internet connection to regularly work in online systems throughout each work day.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Process ISRs related to positions within salary levels 1-3. This process involves review of related job descriptions, uploading job description and supporting documents into record archiving system and reviewing/editing ISR up to final approval.
  • Work with Client areas to address and resolve issues related to ISRs, job documentation and classification, in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Support Analysts on the Compensation team with maintaining accurate and organized job documentation records to enable future compliance reviews.
  • Assist client areas with developing job descriptions and/or locating previously developed job descriptions, to meet individual operational needs.
  • Gather compensation data for a variety of needs, under moderate direction from other members of the Compensation team.
  • Coordinate efforts to participate in market survey submissions to third party vendors by providing JHU data in a specified format.
  • Create spreadsheets and graphs, and performs data manipulation at a moderate level.
  • Support information gathering efforts, in relation to equity reviews and broader data analysis projects. May also support other members of the Compensation team, with basic analysis and data review.
  • Assist in large special projects by providing administrative support and data coordination.
  • Support efforts to ensure compensation data integrity, including payroll system data audits for information such as classification, role, level, range, employee salary in relationship to pay ranges, and benefits eligibility status in accordance with established data standards.
  • Research and report on all data discrepancies by navigating SAP, SuccessFactors Recruitment, and legacy recruitment and compensation systems as well as archived files to resolve data discrepancies.
  • Communicate data inconsistencies with divisional Human Resources representative or other HR data processor giving clear instructions on how to resolve errors and audit data cleanup efforts.
  • Support compensation file management archiving and data cleanup efforts in OnBase record retention system.
  • Assist Sr. Compensation Analysts with timely record keeping of all compensation actions (reclassifications, equity and market reviews, etc.) by compiling information, uploading it, and accurately indexing files in the electronic filing system (Onbase).
  • Respond to general inquiries sent to the Compensation inboxes. Route complex questions to members of the Compensation team for further assistance.
  • Provide confirmation of minimum qualifications to hiring managers and talent acquisition team members.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Associates Degree in Human Resources Administration, Business Administration, or other related field is required. Additional relevant experience may substitute for education requirement.
  • Three years' experience in human resources or a related field is required. Additional related education may substitute for experience requirement.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.


* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Basic knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, i.e., Wage & Hour Laws, FLSA, ADA, OFCCP, etc. required.
  • Moderate knowledge of office software applications, i.e., Excel, MSWord and PowerPoint required.
  • Ability to focus with attention to detail required.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills required.
  • Familiarity with SAP.
  • Experience working with OnBase for data archiving.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Ability to maintain superior level of confidentiality of sensitive employee information.
  • Ability to use software and hardware effectively and proficiently, including MS Office.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of MS Office tools including Excel.
  • Must be able to work remotely and effectively function with a high degree of autonomy in a high-volume environment, while effectively managing multiple priorities and meeting pre-determined deadlines.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills to communicate across all levels of the institution.
  • Must be able to utilize Excel to perform basic, arithmetic calculations, including simple and weighted average, median, percentage change and ratios.


Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office Suite software applications, along with general understanding of HRIS applications to retrieve data for reporting and analysis.


Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time.
  • This position requires occasionally kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, and walking in order to support department's filing, retrieval, and document storage needs.
  • Ability to operate a computer and other equipment on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to frequently communicate with coworkers.
