Director Global Underwriting Training Development

Position Overview

(Position available in Chesterfield MO or Toronto ON.)

As a technical underwriting specialist working as part of the Global Underwriting team, the primary responsibility and accountability is to develop, deliver and maintain internal underwriting training programs and activities on key topics (medicine, technology, distribution, market changes, products etc.) for RGA underwriters that will meet the varied professional development requirements of RGA underwriters around the world

This position will also provide support to global business units through co-signing large and/or complex cases on an ad hoc basis as back up for the AVP, Global Underwriting Technical Oversight and Development.

This position will also be responsible for participating in underwriting projects and promoting RGA to clients as and when needed.

Responsibilities
  • As a technical underwriting subject matter expert, support the development of customized underwriting learning and development initiatives specifically for RGA underwriters to suit business unit needs and in accordance with the Underwriting Core Competency Framework. This includes providing content and/or writing modules and delivering training as and when needed either through webinars or in person at one of our global underwriting offices.
  • Design and conduct pre- and post-course assessments as appropriate demonstrating knowledge or skill transfer improvements that meet or exceed stated objectives and enter training results into tracking logs
  • Use current and exceptional adult learning and instructional design methodologies to analyze RGA underwriter training needs, determine best mode of delivery for global or regional distribution, design and develop engaging e-learning modules, webinars or in person training for distribution to underwriters in RGA offices globally.
  • Consult with Global Underwriting Business Owners to identify employee training needs, assess job improvements following delivery of training and education programs and modify programs accordingly based on job improvements and post-course evaluations.
  • Develop strategy and schedule for training course review and updates as well as manage all governance and create documentation of the internal underwriting processes
  • Manage all aspects of the Learning Management System used by Learning Gateway (currently Litmos) and liaise with RGA Human Resources department to publish RGA UW development courses to the Learning Exchange.
  • Cultivate good working relationships with RGA's Regional and Local Office Chief Underwriters, Medical Directors and all senior underwriters across RGA
  • Stay current with international trends and developments pertaining to underwriting and integrate them into all aspects of the role and specifically into underwriting training responsibilities. Also develop an understanding of key regional, market and regulatory differences as they affect underwriting practices and be able to implement this knowledge into day-to-day activities.
  • Provide solutions to complex problems on individual cases or business concerns that may affect RGA's underwriting competitiveness in each market by acting as, or being developed tp provide backup cosigner for Global UW
  • Represent RGA at industry functions and meetings on an as needed basis.

Requirements

Education and Experience

Required

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent tertiary qualifications
  • 7+ years' experience underwriting life, disability income, TPD, critical illness products including for impaired lives and other complex risks with demonstrated progressive levels of authority
  • Experience underwriting large life insurance policies (in excess of USD 10 million)
  • Experience identifying underwriting training needs and delivering this training, either in one-on-one on-the-job situations or in more formal settings
  • FLMI, FALU, and/or CLU (or equivalent) accreditation or progress towards accreditation
  • Experience underwriting large life insurance policies (in excess of USD 10 million)

Preferred:

  • Prior experience in RGA's facultative underwriting techniques
  • Experience developing and delivering underwriting training
  • Experience with evaluating and adopting new underwriting techniques such as alternative requirements (e.g. prescription databases), developing automated underwriting rulesets or other automation of new business and/or input into predictive modeling
  • Strong technology background
  • 5+ years of experience in adult training facilitation (relevant qualifications highly regarded)
  • Advanced experience with Articulate Storyline (experience with additional learning technologies including authoring software, learning management systems, web or mobile design, video or graphics editing highly regarded)
  • Experience of the life insurance industry in more than one market a distinct advantage

Skills and Abilities

Required

  • Expert knowledge of insurance principles, underwriting policies and procedures and guidelines for dealing with risk analysis
  • Proven advanced presentation and facilitation skills
  • Advanced experience with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
  • Intermediate Microsoft Excel, Outlook and SharePoint skills
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills using experience, research guidelines and internal resources
  • Exceptional commitment to a superior end user experience.
  • Well organized with ability to manage multiple tasks, projects and/or sub-teams simultaneously, including the ability to handle changing priorities
  • The ability to work independently with minimal oversight yet complete goals/tasks within agreed on delivery dates
  • Exceptional ability to liaise with individuals across a wide variety of operational, functional, and technical disciplines.
  • Ability to work independently online and to accommodate peers in all time zones
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills
