Job Summary

The Vehicle Systems Division (VSD) sits at the center of the ideas and data behind current and future systems supplying innovative research and development; technical evaluations during the acquisition process; conceptual and detailed design; assembly, integration, and test; and operational support. Comprised primarily of highly-trained mechanical and aerospace engineers, VSD provides national expertise in the areas of vehicle engineering; guidance, navigation, and controls; robotics; electro-mechanical devices; embedded systems; fluid mechanics; propulsion; thermal control; orbital mechanics; mechanisms; structures; structural dynamics; and dynamic environments.

The team is seeking a Vibroacoustics and Shock Engineer to further strengthen its rigor and depth in the areas of analysis, modeling, and advanced signal processing, and to increase its collaboration across technical disciplines within the organization. This position will be a hybrid work model and offer partially remote with some onsite work required in El Segundo, CA.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Provide applied expertise in the field of aeroacoustics / vibroacoustics and shock in support of launch, space, missile defense programs, and internal research projects

  • Build test- and flight-correlated models that contribute to technical assessments across multiple programs

  • Leverage commercial tools and develop independent simulation tools and processes to solve vibroacoustic problems

  • Collaborate with propulsion, fluids, structures, and ordnance departments on forcing function development and analyses

  • Develop independent analytical and computational capabilities to solve problems in vibration, shock, and acoustics

  • Contribute to advancement of signal processing capabilities in collaboration with dynamics, propulsion, and data science disciplines

  • Present technical and project status briefings to management, internal and external customers, and contractors

  • You should have strong leadership skills which includes: training, motivating and directing employees to optimize workplace productivity and promote professional growth

This position is available as a Member of Technical Staff or as a Senior Member of Technical Staff

What You Need to be Successful

Minimum Requirements:

Member of Technical Staff

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field or equivalent

  • Typically, 2+ years relevant experience is required

  • Coursework relevant to concepts in one or more of the following: structural dynamics, structural mechanics, rocket propulsion, aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, turbomachinery, acoustics, finite element theory, statistics

  • Working knowledge of finite element analysis approach and other computational methods for the solution of problems in structural dynamics and vibroacoustics

  • Working knowledge of statistical energy analysis and boundary element analysis

  • Experience in data processing and spectral analysis of dynamic signals

  • Willingness to occasionally travel (domestically and internationally), and to work off-business hours to support customer needs, approximately 10% (as required)

  • This position requires ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

Senior Member of Technical Staff

Same requirements as a Member of Technical Staff noted above, in addition to:

  • Typically, 5+ years of experience in dynamic environments

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to staff

How You Can Stand Out

It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:

  • Advanced degree in a STEM field or equivalent

  • Proficiency in commercial vibroacoustic tools, such as Wave6, VA One, FEMAP, Hypermesh

  • Experience in wave domain or energy-based analytical solutions to vibration, shock, and acoustics problems

  • Familiarity in aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, combustion and turbomachinery phenomena

  • Experience in structural/mechanical design and analysis

  • Strong technical background in dynamic environments testing and instrumentation selection/setup

  • Hands-on hardware experience, at or outside of workplace

  • Coursework in structural dynamics, structural mechanics, rocket propulsion, aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, turbomachinery, acoustics, finite element theory, statistics

  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance
