Summary
Reporting to the Managing Director of Business Development, the role is responsible for valuation, due diligence, negotiation, and execution of utility scale renewable (solar, wind and energy storage) development project acquisition opportunities as well as strategy, structuring, and pricing support for development and power marketing. Our headquarters are in San Francisco, CA but we are also open to remote work for the right candidate.
Principal Responsibilities & Key Results
- Manage the renewable energy project acquisition process: support origination, structuring, and closing of high-quality and profitable solar, wind and energy storage acquisitions as a key member / leader of a transaction team.
- Coordinate with internal constituents and third-party consultants to perform due diligence activities.
- Work with development, engineering, procurement, construction, capital markets, O&M and asset management teams to ensure conformance with underwriting guidelines, investment metrics and forecasted cash flows. Run sensitivity analyses and generate ideas to optimize valuations and transaction structures.
- Strong quantitative skills required - own the project financial model and / or work with analysts.
- Prepare detailed memos and presentations for senior management and investment committee.
- Create and manage tools to monitor market activity and track internal origination strategy to identify new growth areas and M&A targets.
- Support on-going origination, development, and financing activities for projects Clearway owns.
- Support pricing analysis and bidding strategy to originate offtake contracts for Clearway's 25 GW+ development portfolio of utility scale solar, wind and energy storage projects.
- Develop statistical analyses to quantify risk in highly structured commodity transactions.
- Work with functional groups, third-party consultants and various other stakeholders to drive projects forward and perform quantitative analyses to support development and financing decisions.
- Lead strategic initiatives aimed at improving analytical tools and informing key business activities at Clearway.
- Assist with ongoing efforts to improve financial optimization, underwriting, deal tracking, etc.
- Lead special projects across internal functional groups to drive value creation throughout the development, engineering, procurement, construction and financing processes.
- Develop innovative financial and offtake structures and improve existing quantitative analysis tools.
Knowledge & Skills
- A driven self-starter with strong problem-solving and communication skills.
- Ability to independently originate and lead a transaction, coordinating multiple internal and external constituents.
- Excellent aptitude for analytical and financial modeling with demonstrated attention to detail. Strong quantitative skills are a must for this position. Advanced capabilities in Excel and PowerPoint are essential.
- Ability to summarize complex issues and identify risks, opportunities and next steps.
- Ability to manage simultaneous projects/work streams, set priorities, and exercise independent judgment.
Ideal Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree required in finance, business administration, economics, science and/or engineering. Master's Degree, CFA, or other ongoing education a plus.
- 4+ years of relevant work or internship experience at a U.S. solar, wind, or energy storage development company / Independent Power Producer in a M&A, finance, or a development role with specific focus on financial modeling and valuation or relevant, transferable experience in investment banking or private equity (or similar).
- Experience navigating discounted cash flow models is required.
- Experience covering power & utilities, natural resources, alternative energy, or clean technology industry groups is preferred, but not mandatory.
- Experience with VBA or other programming languages is a bonus.
