Job Summary

Works on research data reporting assignments that are of moderate diversity in scope. Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.

  • This candidate will support multiple studies including NIH and foundation-funded research. They will be responsible for participant recruitment and carrying out participant interviews either in person or remotely. They will be supporting project administration with support from more senior analysts. Travel will be required.
  • This Research Analyst will support multiple studies involving research into Homelessness. Strong organizational skills, flexibility, adaptability to move between projects, and a willingness to get to complete tasks regardless of responsibility is essential.
  • Candidate may work on multiple studies, both NIH and foundation-funded, working with people at-risk for homelessness, experiencing homelessness, and recently homeless.
  • The candidate will work on studies, as assigned, with homeless populations. The incumbent will, under the direction of a Project Manager engage in activities including:
  • Conduct structured interviews (remotely and in-person)
  • Manage data through REDCAP and similar data capture instruments.
  • Abstract data
  • Contribute to data interpretation
  • Ability to distill complex data into summaries
  • Working with the project team to support ongoing grant progress reports to the foundation and federal funders, new grant applications, and IRB applications
  • Perform in-depth interviews
  • Keep study databases updated
  • Call participants and send reminder letters to keep enhancing enrollment.
  • Management of study petty cash for participant payments
  • Maintaining files for ongoing projects of the investigator
  • Managing research meetings, including scheduling, taking notes, distributing minutes, following up on deliverables, etc.
In addition, the incumbent will be required to travel within the state for up to three weeks at a time. This work will involve supporting the study leader in working with field staff and supporting field data collection including training local staff on study procedures.

Department Description

The UCSF Center for Vulnerable Populations (CVP) at San Francisco General Hospital is part of the Department of Medicine. The CVP carries out innovative research to prevent and treat chronic diseases in populations for whom social conditions often conspire to both promote various chronic diseases and make their management more challenging. Founded in 2006, the CVP is located on the campus of San Francisco General Hospital. Beyond the local communities it serves, CVP is nationally and internationally known for its research in health communication and health policy to reduce health disparities, with special expertise in the social determinants of health, including literacy, homelessness, food policy, poverty, and minority status, with a focus on the clinical conditions of pre-diabetes, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The UCSF Benioff Homelessness and Housing Initiative is a new program within CVP, which launched in July 2019. The initiative's goals are to develop and disseminate evidence-based strategies to prevent and end homelessness by conducting high-quality research and disseminating findings to policymakers and the general public.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and one or more years of relevant experience and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Working knowledge of research function.
  • Problem-solving, analytical and consulting skills
  • Strong skills to communicate complex information with all levels of staff and faculty in a clear and concise manner verbally, in writing, software
  • Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks
  • Solid organizational skills and ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of survey instruments such as REDCAPs and Microsoft applications including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Demonstrated skills in conducting literature searches of both peer-reviewed and grey literature
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to travel for up to 3 weeks at a time within the State of California
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-functional team
  • 1+ years of work experience in a related field
  • Knowledge of public health and/or social science topics

Preferred Qualifications


  • Graduate degree in Public Health or Policy or related field and/or equivalent experience/training
  • Knowledge of public health and/or social science topics
  • Experience with UCSF systems such as iMedRIS, BearBuy, MyExpense
  • Experience using reference management software such as Endnote and/or Zotero
  • Fluency in Spanish
