Job Summary

The Biomedical Engineering Department is looking for a Biomedical Equipment Technician II to provide support in the maintenance and repair of life support equipment in Respiratory, Operating Room, and other areas at ZSFG. This position will be under the direction and supervision of the Biomedical Engineering Manager.

This is the operational/practitioner level for the Biomedical Equipment Technicians job series. Under direction and minimal supervision, incumbent performs a variety of routine and complex tasks associated with the installation, maintenance, and repair of a diverse range of clinical equipment including life support equipment. Incumbent performs scheduled maintenance on clinical equipment using specialized test equipment, assists in the support of a systematic preventive maintenance program of biomedical instrumentation, and documents the introduction of new therapeutic and diagnostic equipment, corrective and preventive maintenance actions and special requests as required. Demonstrated ability to learn from others on the job. Possesses an intermediate level of expertise and is capable of assisting less experienced technicians.

Biomedical Equipment Technicians at this level serve as a resource to UCSF Healthcare and Academic Research System employees in the proper operation and maintenance of clinical and/or laboratory equipment. They notify user departments regarding status of repairs, assist departments in obtaining loaner or replacement equipment and works with departments to ensure that all incoming clinical equipment is inspected per department policy. Report all patient safety issues to supervisor or manager and assist with correction of issue as required. Assist in identifying and recommending replacement of equipment that is obsolete, has extensive repair history, or has identified safety issues. Conducts evaluations of equipment as required and participates in Device Incident Investigation process and provide follow up to management.

  • Can provide comprehensive support of acuity equipment for direct patient care.
  • Is familiar with the operations and environment that they support such as hospital, clinic, etc.
  • Has comprehensive experience in their assigned clinical environment.

Department Description

Biomedical Engineering Department manages the Medical Equipment Management Plan (MEMP) for Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG). Key provisions of the MEMP include providing equipment & asset management, on-site biomedical technical support services to maintain and repair equipment for patient-care operations, biomedical systems integration, IT security for medical devices, and state & federal regulatory compliance.

Required Qualifications


  • High School Diploma and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • A minimum of three consecutive years experience as a Biomedical Equipment Technician or a minimum of five years experience in electronic, mechanical or electromechanical repair or equivalent, preferably in a healthcare setting.
  • Experience in Respiratory equipment and ventilators is needed.
  • Work requires a background in electronics.
  • Knowledge in electronic circuitry
  • Knowledge in electronics troubleshooting
  • Ability to read schematics, wiring diagrams and illustrated parts drawing of biomedical instrumentation
  • Maintenance skills in electronics, mechanical or electromechanical device repair
  • Ability to read color codes on wiring and electronic components
  • A working knowledge of physiology, anatomy, and medical terminology
  • Ability to comprehend and follow both written and oral communications
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, clinical and medical staff, and the general public
  • A working knowledge of e-mail, database management, spreadsheet, and word processor applications
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays if necessary
  • Ability to function in a sterile environment if necessary
  • Ability to keep accurate records
  • The BMET II is the Principal or Operational/Practitioner level for the Biomedical Equipment Technicians job series
  • The BMET II must possess in depth repair, maintenance, and calibration skills of routine and complex diagnostic, therapeutic, and life support devices and systems.
  • Overtime maybe required at times to assist in and/or to complete maintenance or project work. BMET II technicians are encouraged to pursue CBET Certification.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Associates Degree, military training or vocational training in electronics, biomedical equipment technology or a related field is highly preferred.
