Job Summary

The Payroll Analyst uses skills as a seasoned and experienced administrative operations professional to manage, plan and administer the operations of a small to mid-sized academic or non-academic department or organizational unit with limited scope. The Payroll Analyst reports to the Director of Revenue and Finance. The person in this position applies professional knowledge and experience under detailed instructions provided on complex new assignments and initiatives. He/she acts as the first point of contact with internal and external resources on a regular basis; performs short- and long-term planning for the department. ;and demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions and making recommendations.

The individual in this position prepares biweekly and monthly payroll for approximately 50+ providers. The Payroll Analyst participates in activities related to developing, implementing, and monitoring payroll and accounting systems, policies, and procedures.

This position requires the incumbent to have a high degree of initiative, organization, ability to prioritize work and various tasks accurately and independently, discretion, ability to interact with many diverse work styles and to function effectively under the stress of competing priorities; advanced technical skills, attention to detail, efficient use of time management and the ability to perform with little or no supervision are a must.

Department Description

The Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) provides emergency medical care to over 150,000 patients annually at the UCSF Medical Center at Parnassus, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals at Mission Bay and Oakland and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. DEM administrative and research staff support the work of 77 full-time and 56 part-time faculty members, a residency program, fellowship programs and over 300 housestaff and students each year. Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Minimum 3 years of related experience
  • Thorough knowledge of University rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures for budget, accounting and fund management, and / or personnel management.
  • Interpersonal skills including verbal and written communication, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills.
  • Knowledge of a variety of administrative operational activities such as accounting and payroll.
  • Solid knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong skills in short-term planning, analysis, problem-solving, and customer service.
  • Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques, and / or human resources policies and procedures for staff and academic employees.
  • Thorough knowledge of financial transactions and systems, as well as related policy, accounting, and regulatory compliance requirements.
