Duties and Responsibilities
Under general direction, is responsible for compiling and analyzing financial information to ensure accurate financial reporting for the University. Key contributor in the month-end and year-end close processes including the preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations, and related schedules. Essential resource in preparing financial information for important surveys specific to higher education entities. Provides review and oversight of financial information originating from various University departments for consistency with US GAAP and University financial reporting.

  • Develops and prepares or reviews various balance sheet account reconciliations and subsidiary ledger reconciliations to the General Ledger and works to resolve differences. Ensures reconciling items are resolved on a timely basis.


  • Monitors internal financial operations and evaluates procedures and controls for adequacy. Recommends changes or modifications to promote continuous process improvement.
  • Collects and formats data for special projects and reviews data gathered by others for accuracy. Recommends changes or modifications as needed.
  • Prepares a variety of required financial reports and surveys for both internal and external reporting requirements such as the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act Survey and the NCAA Agreed Upon Procedures & Financial Reporting.
  • Serves as a resource for other University offices, departmental business managers concerning accounting processes and policies.
  • Plays a lead role in the month-end and year-end close processes, including the preparation of journal entries, account analyses, and audit schedules as assigned. Performs monthly close variance analyses and drafts discussion narrative. May review journal entries and account reconciliations prepared by other department staff for reasonableness, accuracy, and completeness.
  • Assists in the preparation of financial schedules and disclosures for the annual audited financial statements such as the cash flow, statement of financial position, and statement of activities and information requested for the annual audit.
  • Oversees accounting transactions for assigned areas and provides technical accounting guidance and assistance.
  • Collaborates with other team members and departments on data requests. Addresses and responds to ad-hoc management requests and other questions from University departments.
  • Supports the development and implementation of accounting policies and internal procedures to ensure controls over transactional processing.
  • High degree of confidentiality, professionalism and self-motivation, ability to work independently and can work well under pressure
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and/or Work Experience
Bachelor's Degree in accounting or finance. Skills which generally are developed with a minimum of five years of related experience.
Qualifications
Must have strong knowledge of US GAAP with emphasis on analysis, reconciliation, reporting. Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures and regulations, and university-wide and departmental policies and procedures. Excellent attention to detail. Working knowledge of a variety of business processes present at the University such as fixed asset accounting, accounting for retail leases and apartment leases, etc. Familiarity and aptitude for financial systems applications and capabilities to support business operations, including property management software systems (Yardi) desired, but not required. Must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills necessary to deal with various levels of management. Self-starter, strong problem solving and analytical skills, strong project management experience and with the ability to meet deadlines. Must be capable of providing business solutions to opportunities and challenges as they arise.

Certificates/Credentials/Licenses
Bachelor's Degree in accounting or finance. Skills which generally are developed with a minimum of five years of related experience. CPA designation preferred, MBA is desirable.
Computer Skills
Proficient with Microsoft Office programs, specifically advanced Excel skills, such as pivot tables, vlookup, data sorting, data filters, formula functions. Ability to create, analyze and interpret large sets of financial data. Individual must be very familiar with financial systems and use of supporting software programs. Proficiency in information/database management and ad-hoc reporting tools is required. Knowledge of Lawson is highly preferred
