Coordinator for Outdoor Adventures

Roanoke college seeks an adventurous, organized, friendly, and safety minded person for the position of Coordinator for Outdoor Adventures. This position is responsible for the safe planning and execution of outdoor adventure activities for students.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Develops and implements outdoor adventure trips, instructional clinics, teambuilding facilitation and special events, including fall and spring break trips.
  • Conducts in-field staff training such as cave navigation and rock site management.
  • Develop and implement general policies and procedures for programming, including mandatory certifications and trainings for staff.
  • Develop and continually improve comprehensive risk management policies and procedures.
  • Manages gear rental service including purchasing, sign in/out, and maintenance to ensure gear remains safe and in proper working order.
  • Collaborates with others on campus to provide unique programming opportunities for students.
  • Coordinates RC Sustain, a sustainability group comprised of faculty, staff, and students, and leads campus-wide recycling initiatives such as RecycleMania
  • Maintains and improves the recycling program in the residence halls and works with other departments on campus to improve recycling campus-wide.
  • Advises student groups including Eco-House, a sustainability-centered intentional living community and the Roanoke College Climbing Club.
  • Assists Admissions and Marketing and Communications in student recruitment efforts including public relations, talking with prospective students.

Education, Experience, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Bachelor's degree in Campus Recreation, Outdoor Education & Leadership or other related field.
  • Several years of experience successfully planning and leading outdoor adventures.
  • First Aid, CPR, and AED certification.
  • Wilderness First Responder preferred.
  • Other certifications such as swift water, canoe, climbing, etc. preferred.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and to adapt adventures as necessary to ensure safety of all participants.
  • Ability to effectively work collaboratively with prospective students and other departments across campus.
