Position description

The Graduate Division's GSI Teaching & Resource Center at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified, temporary English language proficiency test raters for its Language Proficiency Program for prospective Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs), should an opening arise. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed.

Test raters evaluate and score the online Oral Proficiency Test (OPT), administered by the GSI Teaching and Resource Center to those prospective GSIs who do not speak English as a native language. Rating may be conducted remotely and/or in person on the Berkeley campus. Raters are expected to participate in rater training and calibration sessions three times a year.

The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the department. Hours vary from week-to-week and month-to-month, with limited or no testing in some months, and more concentrated periods of test rating in July, August, December, and May.

About the GSI Teaching & Resource Center and the Graduate Division

The GSI Teaching & Resource Center, reporting to the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Dean of the Graduate Division, is responsible for preparing GSIs campuswide for teaching. The Center's Language Proficiency Program provides courses, consultations, and testing for multilingual graduate students who need to demonstrate oral English proficiency to be appointed as GSIs.

The Graduate Division works to guide and assist students from the moment of admission, through the various milestones of their progress, to the completion of their degree requirements. We provide academic, personal, and professional support services that are vital to the everyday well-being and life-long successes of Berkeley master's, professional, and doctoral students. As the authoritative resource and chief advocate for graduate education, the Graduate Division ensures the equitable administration of policies governing graduate studies across Berkeley's 14 schools and colleges. As the administrative arm of the Academic Senate's Graduate Council, we partner with the faculty and staff of each program and the deans of each school and college to maintain the world-renowned quality of Berkeley's graduate education.

The Graduate Division is committed to creating a community that fosters equity of experience and opportunity, and ensures that students, faculty, and staff of all backgrounds feel safe, welcome and included. We are looking for equity-minded applicants who represent the full diversity of California and who demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds present in our community.

For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. The department is unable to provide a visa/work permit.

Please note: The use of a test rater pool does not guarantee that an open position exists. See the review date specified in AP Recruit to learn whether the department is currently reviewing applications for a specific position. If there is no future review date specified, your application may not be considered at this time.
