Job Description

NHCE seeks a visionary leader who can prioritize strategic initiatives, drive transformative change and guide the complexities of a growing philanthropic organization. The CEO will play a pivotal role in advancing NHCE's mission, ensuring its continued impact and legacy of service in New Hanover County.

The New Hanover Community Endowment (NHCE) is committed to addressing health and social equity, education, community safety, and community development needs in New Hanover County. With a significant $1.3 billion fund, NHCE is in search of a visionary Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead its ambitious mission of making transformational changes that improve the lives of all people living in the community. The ideal candidate will be a proven leader capable of leading the Endowment through complex challenges in a visible, public environment. Reporting directly to the NHCE Board of Directors, the CEO will spearhead strategic initiatives in our grantmaking function, be responsible for the operations of the Endowment, manage a growing organization, and cultivate a powerful team of existing and additional future staff dedicated to transforming outcomes for the community.

Responsibilities of this role include strategic leadership in all operational functions including grant making, effective communication and collaboration, and sound financial management. The CEO will oversee an operating budget of up to $5M and manage a team responsible for distributing grants totaling up to $65M annually. He / She will work closely with the NHCE Board of Directors, staff, the Community Advisory Council, grantees, and other stakeholders to foster strong relationships and align objectives. Additionally, the CEO will represent the organization at external events, and enhance visibility through various communication channels. The CEO will be expected to lead a high-performing team of both current and future additional staff members committed to fulfilling the organization’s mission.

The ideal candidate will possess a record of successfully leading an organization, strong experience in public relations and communications, and proven success working with a board of directors. An entrepreneurial mindset, innovative approach to business planning, and dynamic, charismatic demeanor are essential. An understanding of the culture and stakeholders in New Hanover County would be preferred.
