Technical Professional High Temperature Sample Environment

Overview:  

We are seeking a Technical Professional who will focus on experimental support for neutron scattering in way of support of high temperature sample environment. This position resides in the High Temperature group in the Sample Environment Section, Neutron Scattering Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Opportunity to support the design and development, assembly, installation, troubleshooting, testing, maintenance, repair, and operation of specialized laboratory equipment such as various levitation and laser systems, vacuum and gas systems, and other unique experimental equipment and instrumentation as required.
  • Provide a wide range of support to users to facilitate their work in a 24-hour user facility.
  • Promptly react to unexpected troubleshooting event, (often after normal business hours or on weekends).
  • Performs incidental equipment lifts and rigging activities using overhead facility cranes.
  • Contributes to the documentation process for Sample Environment Equipment.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in a relevant science or engineering field with 2 or more years of related experience.
  • Good interpersonal skills and a professional demeanor are essential.
  • Must be capable of responding to emergencies in a timely manner and use sound judgment in their reconciliation.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience and proficiency with CAD programs such as SolidWorks or CREO.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Exposure or familiarity with programming language such as python or similar.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to constantly evolving needs.

 

Special Requirements:

  • Final candidates may be asked to submit 2 letters of reference.
  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.
